craniofacial acceptance month 🌈 to anyone new to my page, i was born with a facial difference. i always feel a bit vulnerable speaking about it, but often in messages or comments people ask why my lip or nose are unsymmetrical, or why i speak with a bit of a lisp. this is all due to my cleft lip and open palate. i am grateful that i was under great care to get my lip and palate repaired at a very young age. i had speech therapy during my elementary years, and my trajectory of surgeries spanned throughout a twenty year period. my outlet and safe space was always dance. it truly was a love and distraction that helped me through my cleft journey. i share this video to help spread awareness for those born with cleft or facial differences and to celebrate you!! remember to be kind to yourself in your journey. your uniqueness and scars are beautiful!! 🫶🏼 #cleftlip #cleftpalate #facialdifference #cleftie

Will was evaluated at the Craniofacial clinic at Primary Children’s hospital. His face is continuing to change daily as he grows. His lower jaw is growing at a faster rate than his upper jaw, causing an underbite and airway obstruction. This is common in children with clefts. When you repair a cleft palate in young children it creates scar tissue which inhibits growth of the upper jaw. Most children have surgery to move the upper jaw forward. He may need this surgery in the next couple of years and will likely have another one when he is finished growing. #cleftlip #cleftpalate #cleftlipandpalate #cleftie #facialdifference #strong #endurance #medicalmom

Say hello to Eddie—Peach’s brother and our newest foster! Like his sister, Eddie was born with a cleft, but his includes a cleft palate. What does that mean for him? Honestly, not much… other than needing a little extra time and care when he eats. We’re incredibly lucky to foster for a rescue that not only welcomes cleft puppies but also advocates for feeding them biologically and species-appropriate diets. Eddie’s meals are thoughtfully prepared, nourishing his body the way nature intended. I’m in a few cleft puppy groups where there’s a lot of talk about soaking kibble and concerns over food getting stuck in clefts. And while yes, food can get caught no matter what type you feed, I can’t help but think: if something’s going to stick around for a bit, wouldn’t it be better for it to be real, fresh, whole food rather than ultra-processed mush? Eddie’s thriving on his raw meals, and watching him eat—slowly, methodically, and successfully—is a great reminder that cleft puppies are absolutely capable of living full, happy, healthy lives when given the right tools and support. Walter’s weaning routine as a cleftie looks a lot different from weaning a kitten without a cleft and even from weaning cleft puppies! Cleft puppies are much easier all around!⁣ ⁣ Now, this isn’t what things looked like on weaning day one. This is after weeks of baby steps and practice. Cleft kittens often want to nurse their food and that’s a perfect storm for shoving the food up into their nose. 🙃 [Clefties can’t have liquidity or soft/mushy foods.] For Walter specifically, that means popping the meat cube into his mouth and pulling my finger back right away so he doesn’t nurse it against my finger. Once he has the food in his mouth, he does a good job of swallowing it. The texture of his food is such that it’s moisture rich (which is super important for cats) but it’s not mushy and doesn’t break down easily.⁣ ⁣ As you can see, he’s super eager to eat and he taps me between bites to remind me to pick up my pace. 😂 As he gets full, his enthusiasm wanes and once he stops accepting food, he’s full. When he’s done, I sneak a quick peak at his cleft to make sure it’s clear. If he has food up there, I suction it out. He doesn’t love this part of the routine, but it’s a necessary evil!⁣ ⁣ Clefties will be more prone to sinus infections and URIs but cleft repair has a high failure rate and subsequent procedures are more difficult following a failed repair, often leading to a larger defect than what was there pre-op. Deciding to pursue surgery requires a thorough risk/benefit analysis for each individual patient, which is hard to do if you a) don’t have experience raising clefties, and b) aren’t an expert in oral anatomy. Most clefties don’t need repair - they just need modifications to their eating routine (namely the right food) and treatment for URIs if they arise.

Dolly Abigail will undergo her 2nd cleft lip repair surgery on 04-17-24 at that time she’ll be one day shy of her 2nd birthday 🥳 Her initial cleft lip repair was at 16 weeks (08-10-22) Her surgeon is calling this a “touch up”, she should be in and out and at the most a one day stay at the hospital. Cleft lip is a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s lip or mouth do not form properly during pregnancy. We found out about Dolly’s cleft lip during our 20 week ultrasound. Of course my initial feelings were fear and sadness. I took time to educate myself as much as possible, even following other cleft moms that shared their baby’s story via social media. At that moment I decided that I also wanted to be “that mom” for another Queen Mama that just found out that her baby will have a similar journey as Dolly’s. About 1 in every 2,800 babies is born with cleft lip without cleft palate in the United States. Lennon doesn’t open his eyes that often. He uses his face, nose and mouth to get around. I am unsure if he is blind or not, but that isn’t uncommon with kittens with hydrocephalus. Lennon is around 3.5 weeks old and also hasn’t started walking yet. He gets around by army crawling through the incubator. This may also be from the hydrocephalus, but it’s hard to tell. Normally, kittens this age are standing up on their own and walking (albeit, uncoordinated), so Lennon isn’t hitting those milestones yet. Regardless of these things, Lennon is stable and hasn’t had any more seizures, which is a huge win. 👏 We will have a neuro re-check appointment with Dr. O’Neil @mashvet soon and I will let him know about my observations.
