#japan is developing a new generation of earthquake-resistant buildings that can "float" during an earthquake-the entire building is lifted off the ground to avoid violent shaking. This technology uses an advanced air-lift isolation system. Once the sensors detect an earthquake high-pressure air is rapidly injected into the bottom of the building within 0.5 seconds, causing the entire building to rise several centimeters, briefly "detach" from the shaking ground, and slide on a layer of air buffer until the vibration stops. Japan has already tested the technology in research facilities and small commercial buildings, combined with ultra-high sensitivity motion sensors that track tiny tectonic vibrations from deep underground.
