All credits to the CMS detector & collaboration! ๐Ÿ“ธ These event displays are visual representations of particle collisions, reconstructed from signals recorded by the CMS detector. ๐ŸŽ† In each collision, a variety of particles is born โ€” but hereโ€™s the mystery: we donโ€™t yet know exactly what came out. Was it a photon? A muon? Or something more elusive?โš›๏ธ Detecting them precisely needs a multipurpose detector like CMS, with different specialised layers! As these particles pass through the detector, they leave a diverse set of traces, such as energy deposits and a range of particle tracks, all captured with great precision by CMS. But do signals give the full picture? ๐Ÿค” Well, not completely! To reconstruct what happens during a collision, our teams take into account the signals that are recorded and imbalances in the detector due to the passage of invisible particles (such as neutrinos)โ€“ i.e. what we cannot directly see to create the full picture. One of the key components is the BTST, a tube that needs to be incredibly lightweight while still being very strong. Pau Simpson studies aerospace engineering, but we need a whole range of expertise to do things that have never been done before and study aspects of particles that have never been studied before! Hereโ€™s a look under the hood of my nitrogen-vacancy (NV) diamond quantum magnetometer. The green laser pumps photons into the NV centres in the diamond, while the microwave frequency generator sweeps to find the systemโ€™s current magnetic resonance frequency โ€” the diamond fluoresces red as the NV centres respond to the laser. This technique is called ODMR (optically detected magnetic resonance). And before you ask โ€” this device was definitely not the โ€œGhost Murmurโ€ device allegedly used to locate the missing US airman. These sensors have genuinely been shown to detect human cardiac magnetic signals in a lab setting, but only at centimetre-scale distances and with significant signal averaging. The idea that they could work at operational standoff distances is not supported by current science.
