🌎 Visual Supports & Bilingualism For bilingual and multilingual children, learning and communicating in more than one language can be exciting, but also challenging at times. Visual supports can make a powerful difference. Visuals help bridge language gaps by supporting understanding across languages. A picture, symbol, or visual cue can connect meaning even when the spoken words change. They support following routines and instructions, reduce frustration, and help children feel more confident as they navigate different languages at home, school, and in the community. Visual schedules, visual stories, and communication supports also make expectations clearer and experiences more predictable, especially during transitions or new situations. When visuals are combined with spoken language, they don’t replace language, they support it. They help bilingual children understand, express themselves, and thrive in both languages. ❤️ #Bilingualism #VisualSupports #SpeechPathology @little_birds_allied_health

⭐️Many parents tell me: “I’m worried speaking two languages is confusing my child.” Let me reassure you: ✨ Bilingualism does NOT cause speech delay. ✨ Exposure to two languages does not harm development. ✨ What children need is connection, interaction and meaningful communication. Your child’s bilingual brain is a strength, not a setback. Save this for when doubt creeps in 🤍 Share with a parent who needs to hear this. #BilingualChildren #SpeechTherapyAustralia #bilingualism #languagedevelopment #SpeechDevelopment

Obviously the speech delay is because they’re bilingual.” I’ve heard this sentence more times than I can count — and I know I’m not alone. But here’s the reality: bilingualism is not the cause of speech or language disorders. It’s not a risk factor. It’s not a delay. And it’s definitely not something to “fix.” As speech-language pathologists, we’re often asked to make recommendations about language use in families — and the pressure to simplify things (drop a language, switch to the school language only, “wait and see”) is real. But when we assume that bilingualism is the problem, we do more harm than good. ❌ We risk reducing communication at home. ❌ We disrupt a child’s access to culture, identity, and relationships. ❌ And we make language development harder — not easier. ✅ What actually helps bilingual children with speech or language disorders? → Consistent, high-quality input in both languages. → Family-centred planning that protects connection and inclusion. → Evidence-based strategies that support the individual, not just the diagnosis. This is the work I’m most passionate about — helping clinicians, educators move away from fear-based decisions and toward equity-informed, research-driven support. 📌 I wrote about this in more detail in my latest blog post: Bilingualism Isn’t the Problem: Welcoming Learners with Disabilities in Dual Language Programs. If you’re supporting multilingual children in schools or clinics, I hope it gives you language and tools to advocate for better. 💬 Comment BILINGUAL and I’ll DM you the link.

As parents, it can feel like there’s yet another thing to worry about — especially in parts of the world where growing up with multiple languages is the norm. Let me be very clear: being exposed to multiple languages does not cause language delays. Multilingualism is not the problem. That said, some children do have language delays — in both monolingual and multilingual families. The difference lies in how those delays are understood and supported. This is why it’s important to work with a professional who truly understands multilingual language development and can look at your child’s communication across languages, not just against monolingual norms. You may hear the question: “Should we stick to one language for a while?” The answer is sometimes — with guidance. For some children, temporarily prioritising one main language can reduce overwhelm and help build strong, functional communication. This should be intentional, time-limited, and reviewed regularly — not driven by fear or guilt. Behavior-based support helps by teaching children how to communicate, increasing engagement, reducing frustration, and building communication skills that can later transfer across languages. Multilingualism is a strength. The right support makes all the difference. 💙

“We speak more than one language at home. Is that causing my child’s speech delay?” This is one of the most common concerns parents share, and the answer often brings relief. 👩‍⚕️ In this reel, Ms. Binitha Nambakat, Speech-Language Therapist at Shine CDC, explains why speaking multiple languages does not cause speech delay, and what parents should actually pay attention to instead. 🧠 It’s not about how many languages a child hears. It’s about how they understand and use communication. 🔁 Share this with a parent who needs to hear this. #MultilingualChildren #SpeechDelayMyths #SpeechDevelopment #BilingualParenting #ChildCommunication

🌍 Not every struggle is a delay. Sometimes it's a language difference. Many children who are new to the country can appear “behind,” when in reality they’re simply learning a new language and adapting to unfamiliar systems. These are often the cases that get overlooked or mislabeled, and they deserve understanding, patience, and proper evaluation. Every child’s story matters. Every child deserves to be seen for who they truly are. 💛 #LanguageDifference #BilingualChildren #SpeechAwareness #DrLoriletMonegro #EarlyIntervention #ChildDevelopment #BilingualParenting #UnderstandingMatters #SpeechAndLanguage #EducationForAll

Worried your bilingual toddler is ‘behind’ because they mix English and Spanish or make up words that don’t exist? 🤔 Here’s the truth: your child isn’t confused or delayed. They’re building a receptive language in both languages and experimenting creatively. That ‘weird word’? It’s their way of connecting meaning and it’s actually a great sign of cognitive development! 🧠💡 Watch closely, listen carefully, and celebrate these little language wins! 👉 Double-tap if your kid has made up words, and save this post for your next language moment! This may be controversial, but… bilingualism does NOT cause language delays. Decades of research show that exposing a child to more than one language does not cause or worsen speech or language disorders—even when a child has an identified delay. In fact, these children can still benefit from bilingual exposure. 🙌 Supported by American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and child language research: • Bilingual children may learn words differently across languages based on exposure (e.g., have more play vocabulary in one language and more food vocabulary in another) • Total language knowledge across both languages is comparable to monolingual peers • A true language disorder shows up in all languages 👉 The brain is capable of learning multiple languages—even when development is outside of the expected range. [VF🇫🇷⬇️] Ever notice THIS with your bilingual child? 👇 They understand *everything* you say in the target language. They can even give you a word if you ask! But when it’s time to answer in full sentences… they switch to the school language or go blank. This isn’t necessarily a lack of exposure 👉 Even with lots of input, the target language is often not the dominant one. Dominance just means the language that’s easiest to access day to day. (School usually wins that role) 👉 In bilingual brains, all languages are active at the same time. Understanding or giving one word is easy, but producing a full response is much harder. 👉 To speak in the target language, your child’s brain has to “quiet” the other language(s). That kind of control relies on executive function, and that system is still developing in young children. Help them by: 🫶 Keep input consistent and varied. The more contexts a word appears in, the easier it is to use later. 🫶 Give them time. A few extra seconds can make a big difference. 🫶 Use scripts at first. Model full answers to help them build those neural pathways! #raisingbilingualkids #raisingbilingualchildren #trilingualkids #bilingualparenting #linguistics

Learning about the silent phase changed the way I handle my child’s language resistance. This is where many well-meaning parents accidentally block progress or even give up. So, if you see yourself in this here is what not to do when your child isn’t speaking the second language yet: • test them • asking them to repeat • correcting every sentence • comparing them to others According to language acquisition research, speech can’t be forced, it emerges when children feel safe and ready. What is helpful instead: • modeling language naturally • repeating phrases • responding without pressure • trusting the process You don’t need to push harder. You need to stay present longer, be consistent, trust the process. Save this as a reminder when doubt shows up.
