OpenAI’s rumored AI pen – codenamed “Gumdrop” – could finally crack the code on practical AI hardware after flops like the Humane Pin.
Teamed up with Apple legend Jony Ive (after a $6.5B acquisition of his io startup), this pocket-sized, screenless “third core device” slots between your phone and laptop.
Key Leaked Specs
• Pen-shaped design like an iPod Shuffle, with built-in camera and mic for voice commands and real-world scanning.
• Handwriting magic: Camera watches you write, instantly digitizes notes, fixes typos, and pipes them straight to ChatGPT for editing or expansion.
• Context-aware AI: Analyzes surroundings, transcribes in real-time, and acts as a seamless ChatGPT companion – no app switching needed.
Foxconn’s manufacturing it (shifted from China to Vietnam/US for geopolitics), with prototypes done and launch eyed for late 2026 or 2027. OpenAI’s betting big – $1B+ poured in – on a series of devices, starting with this to “scrape reality” for better LLM training or just pure utility.
