You might not love hearing this, but here’s the honest truth from thousands of selective college applications I’ve reviewed and developed over 15+ years college coaching: Even families who swear they’re aiming for targets usually end up with 8 out of 10 schools on their first list being either reaches or far‑reaches once we run the data. So this applies. I’m not saying it’s right! But it’s the trends we see out here. We can’t help but have big dreams for ourselves and we should! But that means there’s work to be done (and things to stop doing) to make it a possiblity. Independent and special projects are pure gold in admissions. Showing up for ONLY school‑sponsored clubs or “because it looks good” won’t distinguish you in this process—it just blends you into a crowd of sameness.
