Knowing where your shoulder should be is legitimately more difficult when you’re hypermobile. To get more tips like this scarf trick (or Yoga strap) I have so many in my Ground Program! 👉Ground Control is my intro to stability and pain management group coaching program for hypermobile humans! 👉Ground Control starts Monday March 30, and doors open Monday March 23. Stay tuned for more info! The shoulder is already the most mobile joint in humans….and is often MORE mobile in hypermobile ones. To top it off “the shoulder” is actually 4 joints * Glenohumeral - the ball and socket * Scapulothoracic - where the shoulder blade sits on the ribcage * Acromioclaviular joint - where the collar bone (clavicle) meets the shoulder blade. * Sternoclavicular - where the collar bone meets the sternum With so many joints and over 30 muscles involved, it’s a LOT to manage. The long-term fix is exercise . But it does have to be the right exercises targeted for hypermobility and it takes time. The best part is that this trick is free and easy! Credit where credit is due: I actually learned this from a patient with shoulder instability about 20 years ago, and it’s been helping people ever since. Tips: 🦓 Place a scarf/strap so it gently guides your shoulder blades up and back (elevation and retraction). Bonus: it cradles the head of the humerus to help prevent forward (anterior) subluxation. 🦓 Don’t pull so tightly that you get pinching, numbness, tingling, or cold hands — you don’t want to compress the nerves, blood vessels, and lymph structures 🦓 Use it when you need it, but let your muscles do the work when you can. Over time, as strength builds, you’ll need it less and less. Have you tried this before? Did it help your shoulders?
