Techniques for Writing Humor That Resonates 1. Know Your Audience: * Tailor your humor to your readers’ preferences. What works for one audience might not land with another, so consider their sensibilities and expectations. 2. Use Relatable Situations: * Draw humor from everyday life. Observational humor based on common experiences can make your story more relatable and entertaining. 3. Wordplay and Puns: * Clever use of language, such as puns or wordplay, can add wit to your writing. Use these sparingly to keep them fresh and effective. 4. Character-Based Humor: * Let humor arise from your characters’ personalities and interactions. A character’s quirks or witty dialogue can provide ongoing comic relief. 5. Timing and Pacing: * Good humor often relies on timing. Pay attention to the rhythm of your sentences and the setup of jokes to maximize their impact. 6. Subvert Expectations: * Surprise your readers with humor that plays against their expectations. A well-placed twist or unexpected reaction can make a joke land perfectly. They’re not doing these 3 things: ☕️ 1. Transcribing real conversations: Sit in a coffee shop and transcribe word for word what people are saying. Real dialogue includes pauses, interruptions, and incomplete sentences. ❌ Don’t do: “I am going to the store now to buy apples and bananas. Is there anything you need?” ✅ Instead, do: “Running to the store. Need anything?” 🎤 2. Using unique voices for each character: Each character should have a unique way of speaking that reflects their background, personality, and mood. ❌ Don’t do: “Are you coming to the barbecue later?” “Yes, I will be coming to the barbecue later.” ✅ Instead, do: “Y’all coming to the cookout later?” Maria asked, her Southern accent wrapping warmly around each word. “Yup, we’re heading to the barbecue after the game,” Joe replied, adjusting the Yankees hat on his head. 💬3. Using subtext: Real conversations are often layered with unspoken meanings. What’s left unsaid can be even more important than what is said out loud. ❌ Don’t do: “Hi, it’s nice to see you again,” said Kate. “Nice to see you too,” John said. This could be read in a million ways! Are they excited? Sarcastic? Nervous? Bored? ✅ Instead, do: “Hi, it’s nice to see you again.” Kate forced a smile, her voice tight. “Nice to see you too.” John glanced away, fiddling with his keys. Writing advice: Writing tips for new writers 👉 Save for later! . Read intentionally. When you read a paragraph of a novel that makes you tense or delighted or fearful, question why. Think about the word choice, the sentence structure, the pacing, and everything that came in the scene before it. See how you can use these techniques in your own writing. . Practice writing short stories sometimes, even if your end goal is to write a novel. As Ray Bradbury said: “Write a short story every week. It’s not possible to write 52 bad short stories in a row.” . Write primarily for yourself, especially if writing is a hobby. There’s always going to be someone who hates something. You can’t please everyone! Writers benefit from a thick skin. If you see a tweet about how your favourite trope is cliche or weird, you don’t need to cut it out of your book. There’s a market for everything, and if you write something you genuinely love, it’ll find its audience. . Try finding a writing community. There’s a link to a free writing club discord in my bio under “free resources”. Sometimes a second opinion helps a lot! . You can break as many “rules” as you like. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to writing. If a piece of advice doesn’t suit you, there’s no need to follow it. Your writing is uniquely yours, and that means you have the freedom to break as many “rules” as you want. . 👉  Save for later 💬  Tell us your favourite writing tips in the comments 🔍  Get resources and freebies in the link in my bio . DON’T FORGET THIS when writing!👇🏾 There are 3 Aspects To Writing Material: 1 - Generating Ideas 2 - Refining Ideas 3 - Recording / Documenting Ideas (this needs to happen at both stages) You can generate ideas from more places than sitting at a desk. But you should have a process for documenting those ideas when they come so you don’t forget them (voice note, google doc, notepad, etc) And you can return to those ideas and refine them later. You don’t need each writing session to go from raw idea to complete joke. Some sessions might just be idea generation. Next session you might focus on refining 1-2 ideas into more specific comedic structure. The creative process is flexible - at times give yourself strict guidelines, and at other times record your thoughts in a looser, more relaxed state. Basic Truth: If you’re experiencing writer’s block, you’re likely boxing yourself into a limited format and not allowing yourself to explore other options of generating ideas. Leave a comment: How and when do you experience writer’s block? What do you do to overcome it? #standupcomedy #creativeprocess #jokewriting #productivity

Don’t over explain and experience or circumstance instead choose one hilarious detail that paints the picture of the experience or circumstance. Don’t tell me your dog never got trained because you didn’t know how to train dogs and you didn’t put the time into it that the dog deserved…. Tell me the only thing you taught him to do is give hugs. Remember your reader is smart and they can connect the dots and it’s connecting the dots that will make them laugh. All writing should be funny and this is an easy way to achieve that!
