Comme des Garcons Homme Plus is Rei Kawakubo’s main menswear line, launched in 1984 and shown at Paris Fashion Week. Often described as the most experimental menswear line in the Comme des Garcons universe, it works as a direct translation of her idiosyncratic womenswear vision into menswear. Each season starts from classic menswear pieces, then pushes them with experimental fabrics, deconstruction and distorted silhouettes that challenge traditional menswear codes and blur gender lines. Deconstructed blazers, mixed fabric coats, metallic shorts and skirts, asymmetric cuts and trompe l’oeil proportions reconceptualise traditional silhouettes through an avant garde lens. Recent Homme Plus collections have reimagined men’s suits with panniered hips, bulging shapes, layered kilts and shorts, shredded and reassembled knitwear and exaggerated accessories, using the suit as a medium for artistic rebellion rather than conformity. The line is now part of today’s archive obsessed menswear world. Rare Homme Plus pieces appear in archive focused wardrobes alongside mainline Comme des Garcons, from striped shirts to radical tailoring and collaboration pieces on artists and collectors.
