AS① From summer 2026, airlines across Europe will ban single-use plastic on board as part of the EU’s “Green Sky” initiative. That means no more plastic water bottles, straws, disposable cutlery, or tiny shampoo bottles in airplane lavatories. The goal is to eliminate up to 5 billion plastic items per year that were previously used on European flights.
② Airlines like Ryanair and Lufthansa have already begun adjusting their onboard service. Plastic forks and spoons are being replaced with reusable metal sets or certified biodegradable alternatives. Mini plastic containers are being phased out in favor of refillable systems and more sustainable packaging. Even snack wrapping is being redesigned to reduce waste after every flight.
③ Passengers will notice the shift immediately. Fewer disposable items, different presentation of drinks and meals, and a more minimal in-flight setup. The change is part of a broader effort to reduce aviation waste and align the industry with stricter environmental standards.
④ Environmental groups believe the impact could be significant, especially in reducing landfill and ocean pollution. For airlines, it means upfront costs and operational changes — but also long-term alignment with climate policies and growing passenger expectations around sustainability.
