SHMeet Kate @compostable.kate she is a ShareWaste super host.
Kate is the self appointed Compost Queen & loves all things compostable, so it makes sense that sheโs been a ShareWaste Host for the past five years. Kate collects food waste in Bokashi compost bins from her neighbours. She leaves empty bins by her front door & her ShareWaste donors drop off their full buckets & Bokashi bins there too. This makes it easy, as it does not need to be face-to-face, but itโs always lovely when she gets a chance to say hi to her neighbours when they are dropping off their waste.
Being a Compost Host not only allows you to build soil, but friendships & community too. Kate has made lasting connections with her neighbours who are Compost Donors which extends beyond taking their scraps. Being a Compost Host is easy once you have worked out your set-up & communicate clearly via the @sharewaste app with your Compost Donors. Kate hot composts the contents of her Bokashi bins, so this allows her to collect meat, diary, citrus, you name it, sheโll compost it safely in her hot & steamy set up.
Kate also asks her Compost Donors to add carbon materials to their collection caddies and Bokashi bins as this helps to keep her compost healthy.

PENeeded to get in and aerate the compost and get the lid on to keep out some of the rain. Couldnโt help but use this super sweet audio from @compostable.kate and her little garden helper ๐ The corkscrew aerator makes such a massive difference and makes turning the big bay much easier. The girls will always come running when they see it to make sure they are not missing out on any grubs that get unearthed. Still definitely possible to do this with them in the pile we just go slowly and carefully.

MEFinally we got a proper composter and a big thanks to my husband who helped me to set it up.
We filled the composter with good balance of carbon and nitrogen and hoping that it heats up quickly.
I also added layers of compost from the bin which was already pre-cooked. This will add microbes ๐ฆ quickly to my compost and helps to heat up much faster.
Hoping that this batch will be successful too. Wish me luck ๐

I have been a bit out of action with the โCโ word! Day 5 and starting to feel a bit more human! I am busting to get back into the garden and do some more twisting and hang out with the girls! ITLet's upcycle old takeout containers into clear pots! Clear pots can be so expensive online, so this cheap DIY is great because you get to reuse containers that would get thrown away.
Tips for making a pot:
1. Wear a mask and gloves for safety
2. Use a well ventilated area
3. Make sure to wash the container before using
4. Make as many holes as you like. Feel free to play around with hole size and shape!
5. Feel free to use containers that are slightly damaged. One of mine had a slit on the side and it still worked perfectly as a pot.
6. I used a 32oz deli container, but smaller soup containers work great as well.
*Melting plastic can be dangerous and I don't recommend it for everyone. Keep in mind that you're doing this at your own risk*
