Around the time I turned 15, my mom gifted me a Nina Simone compilation record called, “Nina Simone’s Finest Hour”. . I was immediately awestruck by her voice, which at the time was so different than any voice I had ever heard before. Strong and rich, forceful and tender, raw and exuberant. I was of course, also deeply impressed with her piano playing, but there was always something in her voice- her brutal honesty, and her willingness to speak very candidly in her music about social and political turmoil, that was somehow left even more of an impression on me than her very obvious technical skill. I think that seeing a woman embody this so beautifully in her work, really influenced me to want to write songs that are directly political alongside songs that are more personal or poetic. I think there’s a place for them all. I wrote this song, “The Door”, during Trump’s first term, outraged by the cruelty of his family separation policy at the border and jumped at the chance to have it arranged for the @awesomeorchestra by @brianadammccune Now, so many years later look where we are. People made excuses for his cruelty and the cruelty of his administration then, and now more people are being separated, jailed, and killed. That doesn’t have to be our reality though. We can always choose to see the humanity in others. As long as we’re alive, we have new chances every day to start over. . Photo by @lea_brun0 . Video by @y.sun_and_moon.x

Dear Nina Simone, Your work and dedication to the gift inside of you has blessed me. Black History Month. If you’ve ever asked me who my musical influences are, then you know I’ve always been quick to say that Nina Simone is high on my list. A true musical genius who faced a lot of hardships & racial injustice. - Yet she fought hard to be loud & be heard. I aspire to be more like Nina.

Let's talk about Nina Simone, an absolute icon and hands down one of my favorite artists. An incredible, passionate, outspoken woman who celebrated and wanted to elevate Black people, Nina Simone was also complex and challenged expectations and norms. She couldn't fit into typical music industry categories, integrating classical piano training with blues, folk, jazz, and contemporary elements from the 60s through the end of her 40-year career until she passed in 2003. A force of nature who made many others nervous, she was loudly, proudly herself and openly bisexual. Her talent drew me in. Her vibe excited me. Her story locked me in for life. Nina Simone performing “Ain’t Got No, I Got Life” Live in London in 1968 Nina Simone never separated her music from her lived experiences. Her songwriting was never a detached interpretation. Her music carried the imprint of her reality and they best represetned her anger, tenderness, political awareness and her discipline as a classically trained pianist navigating a world that refused to give her the respect she deserved. Her vulnerability in her singing wasn’t theatrical or a facade, it was her position. You can hear it in the way she phrased her lyrics and the pauses in between lines. The way she would hold a note just long enough to make the lyric land harder than expected said everything. Nina’s songwriting and song selection were fueled by her experiences, not in a confessional diary sense, but in a structural one. The civil rights movement shaped her repertoire. Personal betrayal shaped her tone. Her classical training shaped her harmonic choices. Nothing was for decoration. This is why her discography doesn’t feel outdated, it feels as relevant now as it did five decades ago. Her music wasn’t escapism. It was a testimony to what her consciousness was telling her. This is why her music still resonates because it doesn’t sound like performance detached from consequence, it sounds like someone who understood that art is most powerful when it refuses to separate emotion from truth. #Music #NinaSimone

My shows are happening next week! The 28th in Burbank (link to tix in comments and in my bio). The 27th for a casual set at the Butcher’s Daughter. I’m excited to be celebrating Nina Simone’s birthday with a tribute to her journey and her music. She was fierce! Whether as a protestor or a lover, she gave her all… or she didn’t if she wasn’t in the mood. LOL! She once said, ‘You have to know to leave the table when love is no longer being served.’ And she definitely honored that! While I wish the protest songs were no longer relevant, they have come full circle, once again shining a light on what Nina considered was a ‘cancer’ plaguing this country. Nina felt it was an artist’s duty to be a reflection of their time. With Four Women and Backlash Blues, she holds up the mirror to reflect the unspoken truths of the African American experience in this country. Hers was a fierce kind of love. She was willing to be vulnerable and also go to battle for those she held dear. I hope to see you on the 28th! Link to tix and info in the comments below and in my bio. In the video, Jamieson Trotter is on the keys, Gabe Davis is on bass, Peter Buck is on the drums, and Joey Deleon is on percussion. #jazzsingerla #ninasimonetribute #livejazzla #honoringgreatness #fourwomen

Nina Simone was more than a singer. She was a classically trained pianist, civil rights activist, and one of the most influential voices in American music history. From “Mississippi Goddam” to “To Be Young, Gifted and Black,” her work blended jazz, soul, classical, and protest into something entirely her own. Her career, however, was marked by battles with record labels and long standing disputes over royalties, including early deals that cost her control of her biggest hits. In a 1999 BBC interview, she reflected on one of those confrontations with a record executive over unpaid royalties, a moment that became part of her uncompromising legacy. One thing about Nina Simone, she did not play about her money. #reels #blackcommunity #viral #usa #fyp

Though first written for the 1964 stage musical The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd, “Feeling Good” became timeless through Nina Simone’s 1965 recording. In Simone’s hands, the song transformed from a theatrical number into something far more powerful — a declaration of freedom and self-possession. Backed by bold orchestration and her unmistakable contralto voice, the lyrics about birds flying high and a new dawn rising took on deeper resonance during the Civil Rights era. Her restrained yet commanding delivery gave the song emotional gravity. It wasn’t just about feeling good — it was about claiming dignity, strength, and renewal. That’s why Simone’s version continues to symbolize empowerment, change, and personal rebirth decades later.
