The link is in the bio. ​What do a falling basketball, the orbit of the Earth, and the cooling towers of a nuclear power plant have in common? 🤯 ​By taking a "Double Cone" and slicing it with a flat plane at different angles, you can create every fundamental shape in geometry. ​1. The Perfect Circle ⭕ Slice the cone perfectly horizontal. Every point is exactly the same distance from the center. It’s the ultimate symbol of symmetry! ​2. The Ellipse (The Squashed Circle) 🥚 Tilt that slice just a little bit. This is the path the Earth takes around the Sun. It has two focus points, and the sum of the distances to them is always constant! ​3. The Parabola (The Arc) 🏹 Tilt the slice until it is perfectly parallel to the side of the cone. This is the curve of a fountain or a kicked football. ​Vertical Parabola: Opens up or down (like a U). ​Horizontal Parabola: Opens left or right (like a C). ​4. The Hyperbola (The Double Curve) ⚡ Slice it steep enough to hit both the top and bottom cones. Mathematical Physics What Is Conic Section? Conic sections are the curves obtained when a plane cuts the cone. A cone generally has two identical conical shapes known as nappes. We can get various shapes depending upon the angle of the cut between the plane and the cone and its nappe. By cutting a cone by a plane at different angles, we get the following shapes: Circle Parabola Ellipse Hyperbola Ellipse is a conic section that is formed when a plane intersects with the cone at an angle. The circle is a special type of ellipse where the cutting plane is parallel to the base of the cone. A hyperbola is formed when the interesting plane is parallel to the axis of the cone, and intersect with both the nappes of the double cone. When the intersecting plane cuts at an angle to the surface of the cone, we get a conic section named parabola. Slicing at a right angle to the cone’s axis of symmetry produces a circle, and tilting the intersecting plane a bit produces an ellipse. When the plane is tilted parallel to the side of the cone the curve produced is a parabola, and tilting even further creates a hyperbola.
