AUWe’re excited to announce our latest #AudubonTakeover this week by Alecia Smith (@alecia_birds)! 🐦📸 Alecia started her bird photography journey in 2017 and quickly realized her love for birding during the early evening time. And as she started to learn more about the rapid decline of birds, she felt compelled to help in any way she could.
That passion led her to @VenturaAudubonSociety where, as an outreach coordinator, she documents shorebirds, especially the threatened Western Snowy Plover and endangered California Least Terns, and raises awareness about the threats they face. To do this, she teaches interns and volunteers to become ambassadors for coastal birds and conduct community science work, including counts, recording banded bird sightings, and more.
When asked about why she enjoys photographing birds, she says, “My camera is a powerful tool that allows me to see up-close details and focus on birds in ways I was never personally able to accomplish with binoculars…and is a really neat way to hyper-focus on details I would often miss otherwise.”
One example of this is when she was able to watch this Snowy Plover stomp on the ground to draw out prey and pull near translucent worms from the wet sand. Stay tuned for more beautiful photography by @alecia_birds this week! ✨
