LUConstruction management advice I wish someone told me in college 🏗️👨💻—
1. Your degree (or lack of one) matters less than your field knowledge. A 3.8 GPA is great but contractors don’t care what’s on your diploma. They care if you can read drawings, talk to subs, and solve problems on the fly. Get the knowledge and skills first.
2. The hours are long - and nobody prepares you for them.
Early starts. Late finishes. Weekend calls. Construction doesn’t run on a 9-to-5 and the sooner you build habits that protect your energy, the longer you’ll last. Burnout is common. Boundaries are rare. Know what you’re signing up for.
3. Relationships are everything. Construction is one of the most referral based industries on the planet, from the trades or in management. PMs hire people they’ve met, been referred to, or have seen their presence in the industry. You can start connecting with project managers, supers, and PEs on LinkedIn before you even graduate.
4. Not knowing the software skills will cost you the job.
Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, Excel— employers expect you to walk in with at least a basic understanding of these tools. The good news is free training exists for all of them online. Learn them before you need them and put them on your resume. It instantly separates you from every other entry-level candidate who shows up empty-handed and allows you to be more effective and set up systems for proper project management.
5. Find someone in the industry who will actually talk to you. One good mentor can shortcut years of trial and error. Most experienced PMs and supers are willing to share what they know if you ask genuinely and show real interest. Don’t wait for it to come to you. Go find it.
