THIntroducing February’s Wildlife Wonder: Contorted hazel (Corylus avellana 'Contorta') 🌸
From its catkins that help support the pollinator population during the harsh winter months, to its high energy nuts that provide a vital source of food and energy for someof our favourite garden creatures in autumn, @rhswisley Garden Manager and biodiversity specialist, Mark Tuson takes us through the benefits of this often overlooked plant.
Growing to around 6 metres tall, the twisted branches of contorted hazel add an interesting element to any garden. These plants are happiest in full sun or partial shade, growing best in moist but well-drained soil, especially chalky soils. Contorted hazels are also extremely hardy and require little to no pruning.
