At some point in your career you’re going to want to make a move. What your independent contractor agreement says in that moment will determine whether you walk away clean — or walk away owing money.
Two things I want every agent to check in their contract right now:
1. Do your listings and pipeline come with you when you leave?
Some contracts say the brokerage keeps your active listings when you walk out. That’s your client, your relationship, your commission check — gone. Get that language out now.
2. What did that signing bonus actually cost you?
Brokers are offering incentives to recruit agents right now. Sounds great until you read the repayment clause. I know of a #contract here in Las Vegas where a brokerage valued two Instagram posts with a reality TV star at $6,250 — money owed back the day that agent tried to leave.
That’s not an incentive. That’s a trap.
Renegotiate now while you’re happy. It is a thousand times easier to fix this from a position of contentment than from a position of trying to leave.
