It means helping your toddler scribble inside a space, over a line, or in a given direction instead of random marks everywhere.
It is an easy pre-writing activity that builds hand control, focus, and pencil grip.
How to do Controlled Scribbling at home
1) Start with big spaces
Draw:
a big circle
a big square
a road/path
a cloud
a big balloon shape
Ask your toddler to:
“Scribble inside the shape”
“Try not to go outside”
👉 Big spaces are easier and less frustrating.
2) Use simple instructions
Keep language short:
“Color inside”
“Up and down”
“Side to side”
“Around and around”
“Slow hands”
Toddlers do better with one instruction at a time.
3) Show first, then let them try
First you do:
a few small scribbles inside the shape
Then say:
“Now your turn!”
Toddlers learn best by watching first.
4) Try different scribble directions
You can guide them to make:
Vertical scribbles → up and down
Horizontal scribbles → side to side
Circular scribbles → round and round
Zig-zag scribbles → fun line control
This improves wrist movement and hand coordination.
5) Keep it short
Best timing:
2–5 minutes for younger toddlers
Stop before they lose interest
