MAStimming gets a bad reputation… but for many kids on the autism spectrum, it’s not something to “fix.” It’s something to understand.
Stimming (self-stimulatory behavior) can look like:
✨ Hand flapping
✨ Spinning
✨ Humming or repeating sounds
✨ Rocking
✨ Fidgeting with objects
To the outside world, it might seem unusual.
But to our kids… it serves a purpose.
Stimming can help them:
🧠 Regulate overwhelming sensory input
🧠 Express excitement, joy, or stress
🧠 Feel grounded when the world feels too loud or too fast
🧠 Communicate when words are hard to find
Imagine being in a room where the lights are too bright, the noise is too much, and everything feels overwhelming… and someone takes away the one thing helping you cope.
That’s what discouraging stimming can feel like.
Instead of stopping it, what if we:
✔️ Tried to understand it
✔️ Made space for it
✔️ Protected it when it’s safe
Because here’s the truth:
Not all stimming needs to be redirected.
Not all stimming is harmful.
And for many children, it’s a healthy and necessary way to navigate the world.
Let’s shift from “stop that” to “I see you.”
From judgment to understanding.
From correction to connection.
