This year with an additional acre in production to grow produce for school meals, and with the variety of farm operations onsite, the pressure on our one walk-in cooler was clear. One thing I knew I had to invest in this season was a cooler for my flowers. If you’ve followed me for long you know 1) I don’t throw money at problems…I try to use what I have and make that work 2) I have a very handy husband…put those two things together and he made me a walk in cooler with very little expense. I can’t say it’s the most aesthetically pleasing on the outside but it’s perfect for what its purpose is! We used materials we had on hand and did have to buy some insulation, the air conditioning unit and the cool bot @storeitcold but that’s it! I’ve worked a long time for this point and it’s finally happening! 🥳🥳🥳 We hired an awesome local woodworker (@gabe_sprenger) to build it for us and it should be finished this month sometime… just in time for all those summer flowers! Yeeeee! We are continuing to grow and improve for you, lovely flower friends! Just 6 years ago I was using our basement refrigerator (and kegerator 😂, every bucket counts) to hold my flowers. It took me a couple years to get a real walk-in cooler and I was beside myself with excitement when that happened. I remember thinking “how will I ever fill this?!” That first cooler was inside a second house on the farm (bad shape). It was built in the kitchen and within the sliver of space that was left I used the counter, stovetop, and sink area as my workspace to hand create every bouquet that has ever left our farm. 🥹 Well, just a few years later and I really need more space! I also need a workspace and to keep everything as centralized as possible. The barn has a huge back area on the ground floor where I store horse feed and blankets etc. but the vast majority of it was just collecting junk. I started clearing it out and the cooler was moved and expanded! 🙌 In front of the cooler I plan to build a big long workbench for efficient bouquet making and flower design. I’m also going to make space for storage: endless buckets, vases, floral supplies, field supplies, etc. All together finally. Some finishing touches in the cooler, hard work in the “studio” and I’ll have a studio space and cooler right under the workshop space! 2 years ago I had no idea that a month later I would need space to keep hundreds of flowers, including some large install pieces, cool. This little DIY Flower Cooler is a storage spot for our bikes, helmets and sleds by winter and my Walk-In Flower Cooler by summer. Honestly, I don’t know how I functioned as a cut flower grower without it and wished I had done it sooner. Having it means I can work ahead, take on larger install requests and simply say yes to more floral work. I used a simple used AC Unit and a Coolbot to keep it a cool 38-40 degrees F.
