PIPEDA… not the most exciting word, but it matters for your child’s data. It stands for the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, Canada’s law for how private companies collect, use, and share personal information. And yes, your child’s data counts too. This includes their name, photos you post of them, their location, and how they use apps or games. So what does that protection actually mean? 👉🏽 Companies must ask for consent 👉🏽 They should clearly explain what they’re collecting and why 👉🏽 They can only collect what’s necessary 👉🏽 They’re expected to keep it safe If your child’s data is breached, companies must notify you, report to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and keep records of the breach. And you’re not powerless. You can: ✅ Ask what data was affected ✅ Request access, correction, or deletion ✅ File a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Because it’s not just data, it’s your child’s right! Save this for future reference. Your girl in privacy, Kezia #digitalsafety #onlinesafety #digitalpolicy #canada #protectyourdata

@govcox said it perfectly and we could not agree more. Our kids cannot sign a contract. They cannot open a credit card or agree to anything legally binding because we know they don’t fully understand what they’re getting into. That’s why we as parents have to sign everything for them. So why are we totally okay with them downloading apps on their own? Clicking “I agree” on terms and conditions that honestly even we don’t fully understand? Handing over their personal data and we don’t even know it’s happening? We should be the ones deciding what apps our kids can and can’t have. Period. And when we do say yes to an app we should actually know what we’re saying yes to. What is this app collecting from my child? What kind of content are they going to see? Who can contact them? What are the real risks of my kid using this? That should all be laid out for us clearly. Not hidden in some long legal document nobody is actually reading. We are literally handing our kids a door with no idea what is behind it and that has to change. That is exactly what the App Store Accountability Act does. It gives parents like us the control and transparency we deserve over what our kids can access online. This is the legislation that could actually change things for our children. Head to the link in our bio to learn everything you need to know about the App Store Accountability Act and how you can support our kids. #childfirst #appstoreaccountabilityact

Screens have become an increasingly significant part of childhood, shaping the way kids learn, play, and interact with the world. However, excessive screen time can disrupt a child’s sleep, impair their ability to focus, influence their behaviour, and hinder healthy development. Establishing a healthy balance with technology isn’t just a suggestion, it’s a necessity for the well-being and growth of young minds. With the COP - Child Online Protection App, you can take charge of your child’s screen time and create a safer, healthier digital environment for them. Built by parents. For parents. For every child navigating today’s digital world. COP was born from a simple, urgent question... how do we keep our children safe online without taking away their freedom to learn, explore, and grow? In a world where screens are constant and risks are invisible, COP exists as a quiet layer of protection. Not to control, but to guide. Not to invade, but to inform. It helps parents stay aware, stay involved, and stay one step ahead while still giving children the space to be themselves. Every feature, every alert, every insight is designed with one purpose in mind: creating a safer digital environment where curiosity is protected, not punished. Because the digital world isn’t slowing down. And parenting shouldn’t have to fall behind. COP - Child Online Protection is more than a parental control app. It is a mission to make the internet safer for the next generation. If you haven’t tried this yet, do it now. The App Store Accountability Act has advanced out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. This bill would give parents basic tools to protect their kids online. Right now, when a child downloads an app, they are agreeing to long legal contracts that give companies access to their data and open the door to content and interactions parents may never see. The App Store Accountability Act would: • Require parental consent before kids download apps • Add age verification at the app store level • Require apps to accurately rate their safety for children For the first time, the companies controlling the gateway to apps would have real responsibility to help protect kids. If protecting childhood online matters to you, follow along. #ChildFirst #ProtectKidsOnline #appstoreaccountabilityact

Despite these landmark wins, the system itself remains intact. Children can still download apps without meaningful parental involvement. App ratings remain inconsistent and often fail to reflect real risks like exposure to strangers or user generated content. There is still no standard way for parents to understand how an app is designed to influence their child’s behavior. We need the App Store Accountability Act. Info and accurate app ratings/descriptions for parents and accountability for app stores AND platforms Passed in 4 states. In Congress now and Coming to your state soon 🤞🏽Article link in bio.

When parents raise safety concerns about apps and online platforms, the response often follows a familiar pattern. Deny the problem. Attack the critics. Reverse victim and offender. It’s a manipulation tactic called DARVO. Parents aren’t the problem. The refusal to implement basic child safety protections is. When companies market platforms as “safe for kids” but shift the burden entirely onto parents, it creates confusion, pressure, and silence. But awareness changes everything. Parents are not powerless observers. When families speak up together, support smart policy, and share information with each other, industries change. A safer digital world for kids starts with informed parents who refuse to stay silent. Follow @childfirstpolicy as we work to build a safer digital world for kids. #childfirst
