Stillness doesn’t mean a still nervous system. 🧠 High masking is not the same as high functioning. It just means she’s learned how to hide her struggle so that you don’t notice 🧠 If she stims, she stays regulated. That small repetitive movement with her feet? That’s her nervous system self soothing. I will never shame that out of her. 🧠 Exhaustion after social events is not attitude. It’s the crash after a acting “normal.” 🧠 She is allowed to take up space without being loud about it. ADHD in girls often whispers. That doesn’t make it smaller. 🧠 I will not praise her for how well she masks. I will praise her for knowing when to unmask. 🧠 She does not owe the world eye contact, small talk or constant cheerfulness. 🧠 I am raising her to understand her brain, not fight it. I can’t quiet the world for her - but I can build her a space where her nervous system is safe. Save this for the days you forget and send it to someone who needs a softer place to land too ✨

I was inspired to make this video by a client who once shared that one of their favorite coping tools is noticing when they’re moving really quickly during a task and intentionally slowing their body down to communicate more safety to their nervous system. I also felt called to share this today because so many of us are holding a deep sense of urgency right now. When we’re exposed to threatening or violent news — especially harm that is senseless or unjust — our nervous system does exactly what it’s designed to do. It scans for danger and it prepares us to protect, act, and survive. If you’re feeling that urgency right now and noticing the racing thoughts, the pressure to do something immediately, the feeling that it’s unsafe to slow down… I see you. I want you to know that it makes complete sense to feel what you’re feeling: to feel scared, to feel angry, to feel mobilized, activated, and driven to protect, speak up, or take action. Those responses come from care, and your nervous system is responding to something important in exactly the way it knows how. At the same time, living in a constant state of urgency isn’t sustainable, and it can actually make it harder to show up in the ways we want to. When our nervous system is overwhelmed, we don’t have access to our clearest thinking, our emotional regulation, or our most effective action. So this is just a gentle reminder that while you’re taking in the news and feeling driven to act and respond, micro moments of noticing when urgency is flooding your system and finding even a small bit of space are a way of taking care of yourself right now. It’s okay to do that. It doesn’t fix everything, but it is a way to care for yourself so that you can better care for others.
