In between my running + weightlifting programs Iโ€™ve been doing [solidcore] once a week to focus on single-leg movements that strengthen key muscle groups that you use when you run and it helps with ankle support and balance. Plus, it is always good to switch it up every once in a while and have fun with friends in a community setting which is what itโ€™s really all about. There is more to improving your running performance than just running more ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Amongst other forms of training such as plyometrics and mobility training, strength training is key to increasing running efficiency, speed, power, stability, coordination, and form, as well as decreasing the risk of injury ๐Ÿ” Running is a unilateral movement making unilateral strength training specifically effective to the sport. So it is important to incorporate some of these movements within your strength training. Performing unilateral movements can help to address any muscle imbalances, reduce the risk of over-compensation, and equally strengthen both sides of the body. While there is an obvious need for lower body strength training, it is important that the core in particular, and upper body, are not neglected as they still play a role in running efficiency. If you are a runner and arenโ€™t yet incorporating strength training into your training routine, as a Strength & Conditioning Coach I would highly recommend incorporating it twice a week. Run most of your runs easy If every run feels hard, youโ€™re training your ego, not your body. 3. Progress volume slowly Weekly jumps in distance or intensity are how injuries are born. Boring progress works. 4. Sleep like itโ€™s part of training Poor sleep = poor recovery. No recovery = breakdown. 5. Warm up properly, not โ€œa few stepsโ€ Cold muscles tear easier. Five minutes saves weeks off. 6. Rotate shoes and replace them on time Dead shoes change mechanics. Your body pays the price. 7. Stop ignoring small pains Pain is feedback, not something to โ€œpush throughโ€. Early rest beats forced time off.
