Some psychiatric conditions sound impossible. This is one of them. Cotard’s syndrome sometimes called “walking corpse syndrome”, is a rare condition where someone may genuinely believe they are dead, don’t exist, or have lost parts of their body. It’s a documented neuropsychiatric condition often linked to severe depression, psychosis, or neurological illness. This is exactly why we created The Strange Corner of Psychiatry, to talk about the conditions that sound unreal, but are very real. The brain is powerful. Sometimes, it does the absolute most. And we’re just getting started. Next episode? Even stranger. Stay tuned. #TheStrangeCornerOfPsychiatry #CotardsSyndrome #MentalHealthEducation #Psychiatrist #mentalhealth

When we say “rare,” people picture something uncommon. But complex disorders aren’t rare - they affect millions of patients. What’s rare is research that keeps up with how these conditions actually show up in real lives. At Complex Disorders Alliance, we’re studying the shared biology behind these conditions - because research should move as urgently and comprehensively as patients need it to. This Rare Disease Day, support science built for complexity for the patient who deserve it most. 🔗 complexdisorders.org #RareDiseaseDay

Cotard Delusion, also known as Cotard's Syndrome, is a rare neuropsychiatric disorder where individuals believe they are dead, do not exist, or have lost vital organs and blood. This condition, named after French neurologist Jules Cotard, is characterized by severe depression, anxiety, and nihilistic delusions, often accompanied by hallucinations and suicidal thoughts. Those afflicted may insist they smell like rotting flesh, have no internal organs, or are immortal. Cotard Delusion is frequently associated with other mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and requires comprehensive psychiatric treatment.

Guess what my next book is going to be about!? Seeing the spots all over my brain and spinal cord on an MRI was definitely a moment of pure shock. To be clear: I’m not sad, I’m just still processing the surprise of it all. This family is definitely playing the rare disease family game on "Hard Mode" lately between PWS and Chiari malformation. Now, we’re adding MOGAD to the mix. What is MOGAD (Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody-associated Disease)? It's a rare autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the protective coating (myelin) of the optic nerves, spinal cord, and brain. It causes the lesions you see in my scan, leading to various neurological symptoms. My last one was a visual and I had other I stances of vision loss years ago... Hopefully with treatment I can keep my immune system at bay and not get any more lesions keeping me fully functional as I am now . . . rare disease family, PWS, chiari malformation, MOGAD, spinal cord lesion, autoimmune disease, neurology, chronic illness, rare disease awareness

Imagine waking up and truly believing you no longer exist. 🧟‍♂️ Cotard’s Delusion (Walking Corpse Syndrome) is a rare mental disorder where patients believe they are dead, missing organs, or have no blood. A diagnosis can bring relief. But when does a label start shaping identity instead of describing difficulty? At NeuroCog®, we see diagnoses as clinical tools — not fixed definitions of who someone is. If you want the full picture behind how psychiatric diagnoses are constructed, the blog breaks it down.
