Did you know that sharks are masters of camouflage?👀
Most use countershading, dark on top, light underneath, so from above they fade into the ocean depths, and from below their bellies blend with the sunlit surface. Simple, clever and sneaky!
Other species, like wobbegong sharks (WHAT A BRILL NAME🤩), take camouflage to the next level with dermal flaps, mottled patterns, and flat bodies that make them nearly invisible on the reef floor and perfect to ambush prey!
And then there’s the rare twist: piebaldism. Sharks with striking patches of unpogmented skin. Not great camouflage, but surprisingly it doesn’t seem to affect their survival. Scientists are still figuring out more about this!

2️⃣ They are among the most migratory sharks in the world: capable of crossing entire oceans and traveling thousands of kilometers each year.
3️⃣ Blue sharks mainly feed on squid, pelagic fish, and occasionally seabirds. Their slender bodies make them fast and incredibly maneuverable.
4️⃣ Despite their appearance, blue sharks are generally shy around humans. However, they are seriously threatened by overfishing, particularly due to the demand for shark fins.

Watch this Whitetip Reef Shark as it cruises across the reef and appears to almost disappear! The sunrays reflecting on it's body seem to obscure the outline of its silhouette so that it blends into it's background.

You can see how this would be extremely useful when hunting, giving the shark a very stealth approach!

Many shark species also have a special colouration pattern called 'countershading' that has the same camouflaging effect. Countershading consists of a darker colour on their top (dorsal) side and a lighter colour on the bottom (ventral) side. Mimicking both the dark of the depths and the sunlight of the water's surface.
