The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) started in 2015 as a $62 billion infrastructure project (roads, ports, power plants, railways) under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The idea was that Pakistan would gain modern infrastructure and boost trade. But with CPEC 2.0 (the expanded, next-phase version), things have shifted in ways that threaten Pakistan’s sovereignty: 1. Massive Debt Trap Pakistan owes tens of billions of dollars to China through CPEC loans. Much of this debt is on non-concessional, high-interest terms, unlike IMF or World Bank loans. Servicing these loans strains Pakistan’s already weak economy, forcing it into dependency. 2. Strategic Chinese Control China isn’t just funding — it’s owning and operating key infrastructure (like Gwadar Port). These are long-term leases (sometimes 40–99 years), effectively giving China control over Pakistan’s trade gateways. Gwadar is not just a port; it’s a potential Chinese naval base in the Indian Ocean. 3. Political Influence With so much financial leverage, China can dictate Pakistan’s policies — foreign, economic, even security. Pakistan’s foreign policy risks being aligned with Beijing’s interests, not its own. Example: Pakistan often supports China on Xinjiang, Taiwan, and UN resolutions — even when it contradicts broader Muslim world positions. 4. Security Risks CPEC runs through disputed territories (Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan). Pakistan is effectively allowing China to militarize and secure these areas under the pretext of protecting CPEC. This undermines Pakistan’s control and creates long-term unrest domestically. 5. Erosion of Sovereignty Just like Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port (leased to China for 99 years due to debt), Pakistan risks handing over strategic assets. The Suki Kinari hydropower project, with a capacity of 884 megawatts, part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) portfolio, has successfully commenced its wet testing phase. Located on the Kunhar River in Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in northwestern Pakistan, the SK hydropower station is among the prioritized projects under CPEC’s first batch. It features four impulse units with a combined installed capacity of 884 MW. Witnessing this milestone on site were personnel from China Energy Construction Overseas Investment Co., Ltd., SK Hydro Co., Ltd., and various construction units. Representatives from local authorities and the project’s engineering team also attended the startup ceremony.
