The difference between PTSD and CPTSD PTSD is a singular acute event that overwhelms a persons ability to cope causing their brain to shift into survival mode, with the amygdala (threat detection system) becoming overactive while areas responsible for safety and reasoning struggle to regulate fear. This can lead to flashbacks, hypervigilance, avoidance, and intense physiological stress responses. It’s as if the nervous system keeps reacting to a danger that has already passed. CPTSD develops from prolonged or repeated trauma, often occurring within relationships where escape wasn’t possible — such as chronic abuse, neglect, or ongoing emotional harm. Instead of one overwhelming moment, the nervous system adapts to long-term danger, reshaping how a person sees themselves, others, and the world. Just like the piece of paper their identity is molded and slowly chipped away until they don’t recognize themselves. The trauma becomes woven into identity and attachment patterns The difference is that PTSD is sudden while CPTSD is from failures in systems Share to your story if this resonated 🔁 Follow for more ❤️‍🩹 @djweeks_ #cptsd #complextrauma #ptsd #cptsdawareness #traumainformed

DOES THIS FEEL FAMILIAR? 😒 Most people know PTSD as something that comes from one traumatic event—war, assault, accident. CPTSD is different. CPTSD comes from long-term exposure to emotional, psychological, and spiritual trauma. And narcissistic abuse is one of the clearest pathways to it. PTSD says: “That event hurt me.” CPTSD says: “That environment rewired me.” 👇Here’s how it shows up: 1. You Don’t Feel Safe Being Yourself You’re hyper-aware of tone, mood, facial expressions. You learned that authenticity = punishment. So you shrink, perform, or mask to survive. 2. Your Nervous System Is Always On Edge You’re either anxious, shut down, or angry. Rarely calm. Your body learned chaos as “normal.” Peace feels unfamiliar… even threatening. 3. You Doubt Your Own Reality Gaslighting trained you to question your memory, motives, and instincts. You over-explain. Over-justify. Over-apologize. Not because you’re weak—but because you were trained to mistrust yourself. 4. You Feel Responsible for Other People’s Emotions You became the regulator. The peacekeeper. The fixer. You learned that love meant self-abandonment. That’s not Christlike sacrifice—that’s trauma conditioning from the enemy. 5. You Carry Deep Shame That Isn’t Yours Not guilt for what you did—but shame for who you are. And Scripture is clear: shame does NOT come from our Father. Narcissistic abuse doesn’t just wound the mind. It attacks identity, discernment, and spirit. Healing from CPTSD isn’t “getting over it.” It’s unlearning lies, rebuilding truth on Scripture, and restoring the image of Christ in you. This isn’t weakness. It’s evidence you survived the Jezebel or Cain spirit that satan sent to destroy you. You were faithfully and wonderfully made in the Image of God the Father Almighty. He knew this was coming, AND He knew you’d rise up over evil and choose Light. This isn’t the end… In my experience, healing from CPTSD was the beginning of EVERYTHING He created me to be. If this hit home, FOLLOW me for more. TOGETHER WE RISE 💪❤️‍🔥✝️

CPTSD symptoms no one talks about but everyone with CPTSD probably experiences on some level. Time blindness. Can’t imagine a future. Emotional numbness when things are good. Feeling like you’re performing your own life. Decision paralysis. Not recognizing yourself. Inability to feel joy. These aren’t talked about in the diagnostic criteria. But if you have CPTSD, you probably know them intimately. You’re not broken. Your nervous system adapted to survive an environment that wasn’t safe. And these symptoms? They made sense then. Now they don’t. And with the right support, they can heal. If this resonates and you’re ready for trauma-informed work that addresses the root—I have a few Soul Care spots open. Unpopular opinion… Support groups very quickly become victim central. They’re mostly people comparing worsening symptoms. And I get it - really. I was that person once. I found spaces that made me feel seen and validated. But also found myself feeling invalidated and ‘not sick enough’ when in those same spaces. Simply put - those communities are rarely about getting better or creating a positive outlook and life despite it. They’re about chronic illness being the centre of your life. And that, from experience, is exhausting. So I removed myself from them. Because that wasn’t the space I was going to find my future in. Be careful how you use those spaces, too. They can be the key you needed to unlock the next chapter of your life, or lock yourself into this one. ~

Let’s break these down 👇🏼 Emotional flashbacks: One of the most common cPTSD symptoms, and they occur when you’re emotionally hijacked by a previous memory (or series of memories). These flashbacks are, by definition, emotional, and may not always be immediately tied to early traumas. Overfunctioning & hyperindependence: complex trauma often teaches you that you can’t depend on anyone, so you learn to do everything yourself. People-pleasing: You learn to anticipate others’ needs and make sure everyone is content with you, ultimately as a way to prevent any lashing out, because you’ve learned that someone being unhappy will get taken out on you in some way. Feeling like you’re too much & not enough at the same time: This often happens as a result of neglect — teaching you your needs are too much, and that you’re simultaneously not “good enough” to receive attunement from your caregivers. Emotional exhaustion: if you’re constantly in survival mode, you eventually reach a point of burnout and dissociation Physical symptoms: This can include migraines, nausea, chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues. This is often as a result of chronic sympathetic activation and its effects on the body. These patterns didn’t come from nowhere. They were survival tools. And now, they might be the signs that something inside you is asking to heal. Healing from cPTSD is possible. And it doesn’t have to be something you do alone. Living with cPTSD inside a relationship doesn’t mean you’re broken, it means your nervous system learned to survive in chaos. Hypervigilance, numbing, fear of abandonment: these are trauma responses, not flaws. The work isn’t to erase triggers, but to recognize, regulate, and repair. More about C-PTSD for PTSD Awareness Month! 💟 C-PTSD changes the way your brain and body respond to connection. Relationships can feel overwhelming, unpredictable, or even dangerous. So instead of reaching out, you vanish. Self-isolation is a coping mechanism that once kept you safe. Now, it might be keeping you stuck. Healing means learning it’s safe to come back. I struggle intensely with this and will probably be somewhat of a distant girly for the rest of my days, but my progress has been great and I am so thankful to hold close relationships today. Understanding the self-isolation cycle is the first step to breaking it, and that starts with finding compassion for your younger self <3 #PTSD #cPTSD #MentalHealth #ptsdawareness
