Most people taking creatine hear “just take 5g a day” and stop there. That advice works if your only goal is muscle saturation. Creatine loading exists for a reason. Taking 20g per day split into 4 doses for 5-7 days can saturate muscle creatine stores faster. If you skip loading and take 3-5g per day, you still reach saturation. It just takes 3-4 weeks. For strength, power, and lean mass, both approaches work. Loading is about speed, not superiority. But creatine is not just a muscle supplement... It helps regenerate ATP, the energy currency of the cell, during high demand states: - heavy lifting - repeated sprints - long workdays - sleep deprivation - cognitive fatigue Muscle and brain do not respond to creatine identically. Muscle tissue actively transports creatine and stores it efficiently. Brain creatine levels appear harder to increase and may rise more slowly. That is one reason many cognitive and neurological studies use higher intakes, sometimes 10-20g per day, especially under conditions like sleep loss or traumatic brain injury models. When the goal shifts from muscle to brain, the protocol often needs to shift with it. That does not mean everyone needs high doses. Higher intakes can cause GI distress in some individuals and should be individualized. It means the target determines the strategy. Creatine remains one of the most studied and well supported supplements in sports nutrition. But how you use it determines what you get from it. If your results feel underwhelming, the question may not be whether creatine works. It may be whether you matched the dose to the goal.
