Quick heads up if you lift or take creatine. Creatine can falsely raise creatinine on a blood test and make kidney results look off when they’re not. A big meat meal the day before can do the same thing. Not kidney damage. Just chemistry doing its thing. Worth knowing before your next blood test.

Why does creatine supplementation raise concern about kidneys? Because: • Creatine naturally breaks down into creatinine• Creatinine is filtered by the kidneys• We use serum creatinine to estimate kidney function When you supplement creatine, you increase total creatine stores, so a slight rise in creatinine can occur on bloodwork. This reflects increased creatine availability and turnover. It does not automatically indicate kidney damage. In healthy individuals with normal kidney function, creatine supplementation at recommended doses has consistently been shown to be safe and does not impair kidney function. Important:• Not appropriate without supervision in those with known kidney disease• Labs must always be interpreted in context• Muscle mass also influences creatinine levels Disclaimer: this content is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for individualized medical care. Most people panic when they see a creatinine level of 1.5 mg/dL — but context matters more than the number. Creatinine is a byproduct of muscle metabolism. If someone has higher muscle mass or is using creatine supplements, their creatinine can appear elevated without actual kidney damage. Serum creatinine is influenced by: • Muscle mass • Protein intake • Creatine supplementation • Hydration status So relying on creatinine alone can be misleading. When there’s doubt, Cystatin C is often a better marker of kidney function. Unlike creatinine, it is far less affected by muscle mass, diet, or supplements and can provide a more accurate estimate of true glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Before assuming kidney damage — Test smarter. Interpret clinically. Avoid unnecessary panic.

Creatine and creatinine are not the same thing — but they are connected. When you take creatine, your body naturally converts some of it into creatinine. And creatinine is the lab value your doctor uses to estimate kidney function. That means your blood creatinine level can rise if you’re supplementing with creatine — even if your kidneys are working just fine. This is why context matters. This is why full transparency with your physician matters. An elevated creatinine doesn’t automatically mean kidney damage. It means the whole picture needs to be considered. If you have chronic kidney disease, this conversation becomes even more important. Supplements are never “neutral” when kidney function is reduced. Always make sure your healthcare team knows everything you’re taking — including over-the-counter products. In kidney health, clarity creates confidence.

Creatine is killing your kidneys 😭 The fact that this myth still goes around is frustrating but also semi understandable. Your kidneys are your bodies primary filtration system, they’re responsible for removing waste and toxins from your blood - and one of these waste products is creatinine. Sounds awfully similar to creatine, right? That’s because creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine. One of the ways doctors assess your kidney function is to look at creatinine levels in your blood. If creatinine levels are high this CAN indicate that your kidneys aren’t functioning as efficiently as they should be or have been. However, if you add more creatine to your diet you are going to add more creatinine, and you’ll see this reflected in your blood tests - which leads people to believe that their kidneys aren’t functioning as efficiently. People then stop taking creatine, their creatinine levels drop, and they think “oh great my kidneys are functioning normally again” and this reinforces the idea that creatine reduced kidney function. In reality, you’ve just added more creatinine into a system that is working at the same efficiency as before. In healthy adults, there is no evidence that creatine supplementation causes kidney damage - so unless you have a preexisting medical condition, just take your creatine.

Does creatine damage kidneys? Creatine is one of the most researched sports supplements and is commonly used to improve strength and performance. In healthy individuals, standard doses of creatine have not consistently shown kidney damage in clinical research. Creatine may slightly increase blood creatinine levels, but this does not automatically mean kidney damage. Creatinine is a breakdown product that doctors measure to assess kidney function. Individuals with pre-existing kidney disease should consult a healthcare professional before using creatine. Do you use creatine regularly or avoid it? Save this post if you train consistently. Does creatine damage kidneys? Creatine is one of the most researched sports supplements used to support strength and high-intensity exercise performance. Many concerns about kidney damage come from confusion between creatine and creatinine in blood tests. Creatine supplementation can slightly increase creatinine levels because creatinine is a natural breakdown product of creatine metabolism. This change does not automatically mean kidney damage. For healthy individuals using recommended doses, research generally does not show consistent evidence of kidney harm. People with existing kidney disease should consult a healthcare professional before using supplements. Do you use creatine or avoid it because of kidney concerns? Creatine isn’t harming your kidneys The idea that it does stems from a common metabolic byproduct: creatinine When you supplement with creatine, some of it naturally metabolizes into creatinine (which standard lab tests flag as a possible sign of kidney dysfunction) So if you’re supplementing with creatine, higher blood creatinine is expected and harmless (it’s not kidney damage) For a much more accurate picture of kidney function, consider measuring cystatin C _ From a recent FoundMyFitnes Premium Member Q&A Sign up to participate in the next one at foundmyfitness.com/ask-me-anything
