Inference Based CBT (ICBT) is an evidence based treatment for OCD that doesn’t involve exposures. Instead, it targets obsessional doubt & helps sufferers not fall for the flawed reasoning and tricks OCD uses to get us to be anxious about hypothetical “what ifs”. 1. Slowing down 2. Ask yourself, “What am I assuming or predicting will happen if I don’t perform this compulsion? 3. Consider evidence that supports or contradicts this belief. Ask, “Is there any real evidence that supports this fear?” 4. Differentiate between what is actually happening and what you fear might happen. 5. Recognize that your inference is based on a possibility, not a reality. Focus on the here and now. 6. Develop alternative explanations for your fears. Replace catastrophic thinking with more a realistic perspective. 7. Make a choice based on values and not what ifs.
