I hesitate to share Wells’ meals sometimes because they are far from “normal” for a 4 year old. People often comment “That’s a snack not a meal” and I can understand that it looks different to what people may be used to seeing. The reality is that Wells’ diet is SO LIMITED and he’s also just a normal picky 4 year old too. He can’t eat anything with sugar in the first 4 ingredients, lactose (he does okay with cheese thankfully), and anything heavy in starches. He also has an anaphylactic allergy to peanut. He does eat a lot of KETO products and a lot of the same things on repeat. But you know what? He likes it. He’s fed. He’s growing. He’s not having GI issues anymore. His blood sugars remain calm and stable. His A1C is 5.9 with minimal lows. So even though it may be different than you’re used to seeing, this is what works for HIM and for us. There’s something in the diet for ALL of us that will cause gas & bloating (and diarrhea) for SOME of us. Can you guess what it is?🤔🤔 The reason for many is a deficiency of the enzyme sucrase. The genetic condition is called CSID — congenital sucrase isomaltase deficiency. What’s interesting is that this enzyme deficiency can present at all stages of life. I’ve diagnosed seniors with this condition. What’s also interesting is how common I have discovered this condition to be. Certainly more common than celiac disease in my experience. Yet it is listed as having an incidence of 0.2% by the National Organization for Rare Disorders. I think it’s an issue of testing…. We didn’t have wide scale testing until recently, and even then this isn’t on the radar of most doctors, so it’s still under recognized. It’s rather ⚡️shocking⚡️ how many people have this condition and can improve by simply asking the question — is this the cause of my gas & bloating (and/or diarrhea)? I believe in liberal testing. Let’s find out! I have seen far too many people who were told they had IBS, they suffered for years, bounced from doctor to doctor, and then discovered through testing that they never in fact had IBS. They had this… A starting point can be the 4-4-4 challenge. Here’s how you do it: 1 - Stir 4 tbsp sugar🍬 into 4 Oz of water 💦. 2 - Drink on an empty stomach. 3 - Monitor for 4 hours. If you develop symptoms, you should have further testing. This test doesn’t diagnose anything. Also, if you know this is going to cause extreme symptoms, don’t do it. Just move forward with talking to your doctor. Sucrase deficiency, by the way, is something that I explore in more detail along with several other causes of food intolerances in Chapter 6 of The Fiber Fueled Cookbook. Are you surprised?
