What is Plantar Fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia — the thick band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes — becomes irritated or overloaded. People with plantar fasciitis often experience sharp pain in the bottom of the heel, especially during the first steps in the morning or after long periods of sitting. The pain may improve as the foot warms up but can return with prolonged standing, walking, or activity.
