This little beauty is a FRECKLED PORCUPINEFISH (scientifically known as Diodon holocanthus). I couldn’t get over those striking blue eyes—they’re actually used to help them see better in low light!
Even though it looks like a adorable floating pincushion, it’s actually a close cousin to the “true” pufferfish family. Those long spines are lying flat for now, but if it gets spooked, it can suck in water and turn into a literal underwater mace. So glad I stayed on its good side! 🌊✨

SCThis tiny juvenile Painted Frogfish is easily one of the most unusual predators on the reef. In places like the Philippines, they’ve evolved to match the exact color of the sponges around them, hiding in plain sight.
Instead of swimming, they use modified fins to "walk" across the seafloor, remaining motionless for days until the perfect meal wanders too close. It’s a masterclass in patience and one of the fastest strikes in the ocean—just six milliseconds!

SAPorcupine pufferfish can inflate themselves with water or air to look like a ball of spikes making it hard for their predators to swallow.
They sometimes also do this to dislodge food that may be stuck in their throat. Pretty sure that was the case here cuz I had no intention of even trying to swallow this guy 😐
They possess a poison called Tetrodotoxin in their skin and spikes which is dangerous for most predators and humans, but that being said, they’re absolutely harmless and rarely ever attack humans.
Most puffers don’t have much toxin in their muscle, leaving the meat itself more or less safe for human consumption. Fugu, the Japanese dish requires the chefs to go through all sorts of education and certification before they’re allowed to prepare the animals for people to consume.
