It’s not CGI. It’s biology. 🦑✨ Meet the Common Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), the shapeshifting wizard of the sea. The Moment: Watch the skin. Those moving stripes aren't shadows. They are millions of pigment cells called chromatophores expanding and contracting under direct neural control. This specific pattern is called the "Passing Cloud" display. It is designed to hypnotize prey. The crab stares at the moving lines, overwhelmed by visual information, and freezes. The Physics of Camouflage: 3D Texture: Cuttlefish don't just change color; they change shape. Muscles in their skin can raise bumps (papillae) to mimic the texture of rocks or coral. HD Resolution: Their skin has a higher "resolution" (DPI) than an iPhone screen. The Strike: Once the crab is mesmerized, two hidden feeding tentacles shoot out at 2.5 m/s to grab it. Game over. Tell us: Is this the closest thing to an alien on Earth? YES or NO? 👇

The first time I saw a cuttlefish was during a night dive and it honestly freaked me out. It was the first critter I saw as I descended into the dark and it looked like an alien to me. 👾 As I approached the cuttlefish, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me or adjusting in the dark. I soon realized that the cuttlefish was changing colors right before my eyes! 🤯 It was hypnotizing. It was strange. It was beautiful. 😍 I later learned that the cuttlefish has skin cells called chromatophores that allows them to rapidly change colors in order to evade predators. Pretty cool right?! In this clip, you can see its skin “blinking” and changing colors. If you look closely you can even see some blue specs on the edge of its mantle (the main body) near the fins (the one that’s flapping like a skirt!). Then, the brownish red and black specs abruptly disappear and it becomes completely yellowish-white as it swims away. There are so many strange and cool things in our ocean and no doubt the cuttlefish is one of them! What strange things have you seen while diving? 😲 . . . #cuttlefish #cuttles #molluscs #cephalopod #cephalopods #Sepiida #oceanlovers #camouflage #chromatophores #wildlifebiology #oceanwildlife #marinewildlife #oceananimals #marinelife #uwvideo #underwatervideo #scubadiving #muckdiving #scubareel #scubadivingworld #scubadiverlife #scubaworld #underwaterencounter #marinecritters #marinebiology #coolcritters #discoverocean #coralreef #divephilippines #puertogalera

👽 Supernatural intelligence Cuttlefish don’t just read their genetic code; they constantly rewrite it. They use a genetic editing process called RNA editing on over 60% of the protein blueprints in their brain—an unheard-of level—allowing them to rapidly change neural protein function, often to instantly adapt to their environment. This is much smaller cuttlefish - the Reaper Cuttlefish (Sepia Mestus). It is a small cephalopod with a maximum mantle length of about 12.4 to 15 cm (4.9 to 5.9 inches). They are often confused with other cuttlefish babies, but their size is much smaller than the Giant Australian Cuttlefish which can reach a maximum total length of up to 1 meter (3.3ft) including arms and a mantle length of 50-52cm (20.5inch). They are highly intelligent creatures found off eastern Australia, known for their rapid, dramatic color changes and distinct red, white, and brown markings. Also called Chameleons of the sea or Red Cuttlefish, they often display shades of yellow, orange, and red to blend in or intimidate rivals. They possess W-shaped pupils that allow them to see behind them and detect polarized light, which is more advanced than most animals. Reaper Cuttlefish are active predators that hunt fish and crustaceans, using 8 arms and 2 specialized tentacles to catch prey. They live for roughly two years, spending most of their time acting as solitary, non-social hunters before mating once and dying. Sydney, Australia

In this video, you can see how cuttlefish protect themselves when they sense danger. They instantly change their colors and patterns to blend into their surroundings, and if needed, release a cloud of ink to briefly confuse predators and block their vision. Thanks to their advanced nervous system, these reactions happen in a matter of seconds. It’s one of nature’s most intelligent and impressive defense mechanisms. 🦑✨ #Nature #Cuttlefish #Science #Wildlife #Camouflage Explore NatureFacts

Often called the "chameleons of the sea," cuttlefish are highly intelligent cephalopods known for their remarkable ability to instantly change their skin color, pattern, and even texture. Despite being completely colorblind, they use specialized skin cells called chromatophores to mimic their surroundings for camouflage or to create mesmerizing "passing cloud" displays that stun their prey. They possess a unique internal shell called a cuttlebone, which is filled with gas and liquid to help them precisely control their buoyancy. With three hearts, blue-green copper-based blood, and distinctive W-shaped pupils, they are perfectly adapted for life in tropical and temperate ocean waters. Cuttlefish are sophisticated hunters that primarily feed on small fish, crabs, and shrimp. They typically use a three-phase hunting strategy: attention, positioning, and striking. Once they have cornered their prey, they shoot out two long, hidden feeding tentacles to snatch the animal and pull it toward their sharp, parrot-like beak. This beak is strong enough to crack open the tough shells of crustaceans. When they aren't hunting, cuttlefish use their intelligence to solve complex puzzles and exhibit self-control—traits rarely seen in invertebrates. To escape danger, they can use jet propulsion by expelling water through a siphon or release a cloud of ink to confuse predators.
