SO"Brown Sugar," the title-track of D'Angelo's debut album in 1995!
To close off this burst of neo-soul, I felt D'Angelo was the artist to share. At the age of 21, D'Angelo sold two million copies with his debut album, Brown Sugar. He would only release one more album before going on a fourteen year hiatus after growing uncomfortable with the spotlight and struggling with substance abuse problems as a result.
But, the musical genius he displayed in his early 20's was still very much in-tact with his third album, Black Messiah, in 2014. Work on the album had been going on for almost twelve years at that point with various artists joining him to give the songs a more complete effect. On its release, it was met with nothing but acclaim from all across the music community.
