Daffodils are propagated by bulb division. This variety, Argent, was introduced in 1904 and has been in continuous cultivation ever since, which is remarkable longevity for one subject to the shifting tastes of home gardeners. Each bulb is genetically identical to the original. After blooming, the mother bulb gathers energy through the leaves and stores it below ground, forming a new bulb beside her. Over time, one becomes many, all clones of the same original selection. Historic varieties like this tend to cost a bit more simply because they are harder to find and slower to build stock. But when planted in the right place with proper drainage and full sun, daffodils reliably multiply year after year. This small patch, shown last spring, will bloom again in a month or so. Once the foliage has fully died back, I will lift and divide the bulbs and replant them into a labeled crate to continue propagating. My hope is to build enough to eventually offer them to others who appreciate old varieties as much as I do. #bulbs #daffodil #narcissus #historicgardens

How many of these daffodil facts did you know? 🌼   To celebrate St David's Day and the return of Daffodil Diaries, we're sharing some of the lesser known facts about these much-loved harbingers of spring! Now in its second year, Daffodil Diaries is an RHS initiative encouraging gardeners to help us map the UK’s daffodils and locate three rare varieties to help conserve them for the future: 🌼 Narcissus 'Mrs R.O. Backhouse', one of the first pink daffodils, with a solid coral pink trumpet and ivory flowers. 🌼 Narcissus 'Mrs William Copeland', a white, double-flowered daffodil named after the wife of breeder WFM Copeland. 🌼 Narcissus 'Sussex Bonfire', a double-flowered yellow and orange daffodil bred by Noel Burr, an amateur breeder from Sussex who registered 58 new cultivars of daffodil. Find out more at the link in bio or search RHS Daffodil Diaries.

5 little things to love about daffodils 🌼 They’re not just pretty — they’re quietly clever too. 1. Shrew, rabbits and deer won’t eat them, so they help protect young trees 2. Their nodding flowers keep pollen safe from rain 3. They feed early bees in late winter 4. They come back and spread each year 5. Their leaves feed next year’s bulb — so let them fade naturally Do you have daffodils popping up in your garden right now? 🌿

Could you help bring back rare and threatened daffodils like James Kirkham Ramsbottom did in the 20th century? 🌼 We need eagle-eyed gardeners to help us find and identify three rare daffodil varieties: the pink trumpeted daffodil ‘Mrs R.O Backhouse’, the white double flowered ‘Mrs William Copeland’ and the orange and yellow double flower ‘Sussex Bonfire’. If you think you may be growing one of these three varieties, we're inviting you to dig them up after flowering this year and send to us to grow on the John MacLeod Field Research Facility at @rhswisley. A panel of experts will then assess the flowers in spring 2027 and any found to be Mrs RO Backhouse can, with your permission, be donated to daffodil breeder @scampsbulbs who is working with the @backhouserossie Estate, to bring it back into widespread cultivation and ensure it remains in UK gardens for the future. Follow the link in our bio or search 'RHS Daffodil Diaries' for more on how to get involved 🌼

Is this one of the prettiest daffodils you can grow? It always makes me laugh when my husband and I both quietly pick up the same plant in a garden centre, each pretending we’re not sneaking an extra purchase into the trolley. 👀 And it happened again at the weekend at @burfordgarden (We’ve done this with tropical fish before too… but that’s another story 🐠😂) This time, we both went straight for the cyclamen-flowered daffodil. Delicate, elegant and completely irresistible. Why we love it: • It’s a species-type narcissus, which always wins points with us plant nerds 🤓 • Much less common than standard garden centre daffs • Those swept-back petals give it a tiny alpine flower style, windswept look • Petite blooms that feel refined and beautifully natural If you buy one, plant it somewhere it’ll be happy: • Best in moist but well-drained soil • Happy in sun or light dappled shade • Great in pots, borders or naturalising in grass • Comes back reliably each year and slowly multiplies Just the prettiest, most delicate little daffodil. I’d happily have them everywhere. And yes… it was about £7, don’t tell the budget. #narcissus #daffodils #springgarden #gardeninspiration #bulbs

One of my favourite daffodils is this one Tete a Tete. It's compact, a reliable bloomer and great in borders, lawns and pots. Best mass planted for effect. Plant the bulbs in September and October or potted plants now. There are so many varieties of daffodil to choose from and this one brings so much value in the garden. It has an AGM award for garden merit which it really deserves. I recommend having some of these no fuss plants. Especially useful in small spaces they certainly bring some sunshine to the garden. #daffodils #bulbs #springflowers🌸 #the_gardengoat

Do this now if you want daffodils to bloom next year? If you’re wondering how to care for daffodils after they bloom, this is the stage that decides next spring’s flowers. Daffodil care isn’t complicated, but timing matters. One of the biggest mistakes people make is cutting back daffodil leaves too early. If you’ve asked when to cut back daffodils — wait until the foliage turns fully yellow and flops. Those leaves are still feeding the bulb. If you braid or tie them, you reduce the energy stored for next year’s bloom. Watering daffodils is simple. During flowering, they usually don’t need much extra water. After bloom, if rainfall is light, give them a thorough soak so roots can strengthen. In summer, water bulb beds during long dry spells. When to fertilize daffodils is another common question. The best time to fertilize daffodils is early fall, and again lightly in early spring just after they emerge. Do not feed immediately after flowering — that encourages disease. Use a fertilizer formulated for bulbs, and keep it off the foliage. Mulching also matters. A 1–2 inch organic layer helps conserve moisture and control weeds. Just make sure mulch isn’t too deep in spring so stems can push through easily. If your clumps are crowded or blooms are getting smaller, that’s a sign it’s time to divide daffodil bulbs. Dig and separate them after the foliage yellows, then replant in fall. Caring for daffodils isn’t about doing more. It’s about not interrupting what the bulb is trying to store. Next spring’s bloom starts now.
