ABBA's "Dancing Queen" emerged from a 1975 studio session at Glen Studios in Stockholm, initially titled "Boogaloo". Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus composed the melody, inspired by George McCrae's disco hit "Rock Your Baby" and the New Orleans rhythm of Dr. John's Gumbo album. The demo featured nonsense lyrics, but when Andersson played the backing track for Anni-Frid Lyngstad, she cried at its beauty, recognizing its potential .
Lyrics were later co-written by Ulvaeus and manager Stig Anderson, who also renamed the song. The first half of the second verse ("Baby, baby, you’re out of sight...") was scrapped before release. Agnetha Fältskog and Lyngstad recorded vocals in September 1975, but final sessions continued until December due to promotional tours. Despite being completed in 1975, the song was held back until August 1976 to promote their Arrival album, which later topped charts in 15 countries. The process spanned nearly a year, reflecting ABBA’s meticulous approach to songwriting and production.

Released in August 1976, the song appeared on ABBA’s fourth studio album, Arrival, and would soon become the defining moment of their career.
Written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with lyrics by Stig Anderson, Dancing Queen began its life under a very different working title: Boogaloo. From the start, Benny and Björn wanted to create a song that captured the pure joy of dancing, the feeling of being young, free, and completely lost in the music.
They were inspired by the disco sound emerging at the time, particularly the groove of George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby, but they transformed that influence into something unmistakably their own.
The song was built around a sparkling piano line, layered strings, and one of the most iconic intros in pop history. At its heart were the voices of Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, whose harmonies gave the song its emotional glow, soft, powerful, and timeless all at once.
