This Aramaic-inscribed basalt stone, nearly 3,000 years old, records how King Hazael of Aram claimed victory over both the King of Israel and the King of the “House of David.” It’s the first time “David” appears outside the Bible, providing solid evidence that King David’s dynasty really existed as historical fact.
The stele’s story echoes the biblical accounts of turbulent wars between Israel, Judah, and Aram. According to the Bible, the kingdoms of Israel and Judah sometimes allied against Aram-Damascus - mirrored by Hazael’s claims of defeating their kings. This find bridges the Bible and history, confirming that these kingdoms and their rulers were real players in the ancient Near East.
Another stunning clue comes from proto-Aeolic capitals - distinctive stone architectural elements - unearthed in both the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah. Despite the kingdoms’ split, these capitals show a shared artistry and culture, highlighting deep connections between the two. They’re a reminder that even in rivalry, Israel and Judah were part of the same ancient heritage.
