DRDDS/Advanced Standing DDS will give you licensure for all the states in the US ( except NY where you need DDS+ AEGD) whereas AEGD will give you license for some states. AEGD licensure also depends on how many years of AEGD you pursue- 1 year vs 2 year. You can google which states accept what. Not mentioning states here because the rules keep changing.
Dentists who are trained in the US pursue AEGD as an additional training experience before they start working. Now some schools have started to open AEGD program to Foreign Trained Dentists as well. I would recommend getting some US dental experience before this course. It can be hard to take on complicated cases if you are not familiar with US standards in Dentistry ( be it in the form of Preceptorship or Dental Assisting experience)
Pros of DDS:
🔹Universal recognition in every US state
🔹Eligible for Master’s cap in H1B lottery
🔹No state will ever change the rules for DDS and will always accept it no matter what.
Cons of DDS:
🔺Repetition of your dental degree
🔺Have to take all the quizzes and exams again: Prosth, Pharmac, Endo etc
Pros of AEGD:
🔹You will get to do complicated cases and gain experience
🔹May get experience in different subjects like Orofacial Pain, Oral Biology etc
Cons of AEGD:
🔺If you are an immigrant and do not have GC or Citizenship, the states you can practice in are limited which can be challenging if you are looking for visa sponsors
🔺 Some states may change their rules about AEGD in the future
🔺 May not be eligible for Masters Cap for H1B, consult your lawyer for confirmation
