Helen Keller’s birthday and Deafblind Awareness Week mark the perfect time to follow more Deafblind influencers. Here are some I follow, and if you know more tag them in the comments. Catarina Rivera @BlindishLatina Dr. Jasmine Simmons @DrJasmineSimmons Loni Friedman @Loni.Friedmann Rebecca Alexander @_RebeccaAlexander_ Molly Watt @MollyWattTalks Morrison @Morrison_sarj Ashlea Brittney Hayes @AshleaBrittney Descriptive Transcript: Wearing a soft, stylized floral necklace over a blue dress, Haben speaks to the camera. Behind her is a textured wood wall. Haben: It’s DeafBlind Awareness Week, and Helen Keller’s birthday is June 27th. Photo: 24-year-old Helen holds a rose to her face while her other hand rests on an open Braille book. Her eyes are closed, her hair is pulled back into a low bun, and she’s wearing a white blouse with a bow at the front of her throat. Haben: So we use this week to increase awareness. Helen lived from 1880 to 1968. And what I find fascinating is that many of the questions she received during her lifetime: “Why do you travel if you can’t see? How do you have a voice when you can’t hear?” Those questions are still being asked today. And part of that is because we still have an ocular-centric culture. We still need to move away from only imagining a world with sight, to imagining and designing a multisensory world. Helen loved traveling and speaking. She visited so many countries! I had an incredible discussion with Jesse Stanley of The American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, along with his interpreter, Tony Bonny. We talked about the school’s work to increase awareness and understanding of the deafblind community—an important and often overlooked conversation. Deafblind people can live WELL 🚨 Loved collaborating with @bendyblindblonde for this fun video! Sometimes the best content is really just disabled people showing themselves having adventures + existing in the world. Do you like seeing positive representation of disability like this? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️ Transcript: I’m deafblind and so is my friend Monica. We both use white canes when we’re out and about. Our white canes help us to navigate independently and also let others know to please move out of our way, which really helps in crowded places like this one. Here we’re at the Tower of Belem in Lisbon, Portugal, which was built in the 16th century. I think a lot of nondisabled people might assume that deafblind people aren’t living well. Let’s smash that stigma right now! Monica and I both love travel and adventure. We’re living joyfully. Do you like seeing positive disability representation like this? Our white canes help us to navigate independently and also let others know to please move out of our way, which really helps in crowded places. Here we are enjoying the outdoors on a boardwalk near a beautiful blue pond with green trees around it. I think a lot of nondisabled people might assume that deafblind people aren’t living well. Monica, a white woman with brown hair is wearing a long dark skirt, long sleeve black shirt, grey puffy vest, black heeled ankle boots, and sunglasses. 1. Catarina and Monica walking happily together with their white canes on a boardwalk. 2. Video showing our backs as we face a blue pond with green trees. We are talking and smiling and Monica is pointing at something. 3. Monica randomly raises her cane to use it as a pointer and Catarina lurches back a bit lol. Why do people forget there are 5 senses? 👀 It’s not all about seeing and hearing. I’m deafblind and people sometimes say, “Why do you travel the world? What can you do if you travel?” And it’s so misguided. I’m here at the Botanical Gardens in Medellín, Colombia. It’s a perfect place for deafblind people. We can smell, we can touch, we can connect to nature. And yes, we enjoy travel and have a great time. What do you think about this? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️ Video Description: Catarina, a light-skinned Latiné woman with dark brown wavy hair, is wearing a red sleeveless top with black pants, red dangly earrings, and sunglasses pushed up on her hair. She’s holding her white cane in her right hand. She waves and then is speaking to camera in front of a lot of green plants with large leaves, a tree, and 2 poles. There are captions with white text and a black border above her head. The transcript is above in the caption. The cover shows her smiling with her hand on her hip and her sunglasses on with sandals as well. The title is “POV: Deafblind people can enjoy travel! 🌍” #Blindness #Ableism #Disability #DisabilityAwareness #AbleismIsTrash #BlindishLatina #DisabilityAdvocate #deafblindness #deafblind #BlindnessAwareness #Blind #TravelCreator #DisabledTravel

As my vision changes, I’ve started bringing these lights with me when I go out to dinner so I can see the menu, the table, and the people I’m with more clearly. Little adaptations like this help me maintain my independence and make everyday life easier and more accessible. Accessibility: Rebecca sits at the table, she is wearing a black turtle neck as she presents two tall bronze portable lights and demonstrates how she uses them to improve visibility when eating out. 🔗Amazon Lights: https://amzn.to/4kXg6bQ #ushersyndrome #deafblind #visionloss #hearingloss #accessibility

For many disabled people, showing up at a protest requires planning. Will there be an ASL interpreter or will you need to find a volunteer? Will the space be wheelchair accessible? For me, as a Deafblind person, I need a seat or table for my Braille computer and keyboard. Organizers who share detailed accessibility information make it easier for disabled people to join. Descriptive Transcript Haben (voiceover): Braille helps me protest, allowing me to read signs that I’m not able to see. Advocate in any way you can, whether that’s standing, sitting, voicing, signing, online or offline. The video shows Haben and her parents smiling and waving under a majestic redwood. A short wooden border circles the tree, and Haben is sitting on the border with one hand on her Braille computer and her Seeing Eye dog on the ground beside her. The video pans around the park showing hundreds of people of all ages—some sitting, some standing, and some holding signs that say: “Respect the dignity of every human being,” “Fight fascism,” “Hands off the rule of law,” “Don’t tread on our first amendment rights,” “Stop the big ugly betrayal bill,” “Dissent,” and more. #Protest #a11y #Accessibility #Braille #Deafblind
