Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire died 9 yrs ago on 24 September. The yngst & longest-lived of those sisters. She was probably the most remarkable of the 6: beautiful, funny, original; a woman of vision & strong opinions. And great style. While Nancy was the clothes horse, adored Dior - even bullied scruffy Decca into the New Look - Debo was for her fashion & flair. She too took to it & in 1953 had an ice pink satin Dior Carmel gown. For the coronation in the same yr she needed dispensation to wear a mid-19th century, ermine-trimmed robe because it was off-the-shoulder. She used pronounce ‘After agricultural shows, Marks & Spencer is the place to go shopping, & then Paris. Nothing in between seems to be much good’ ‘Much better than the strange-looking garments in desperate colours at £1,000 each in the Kensington shops. In the unlikely event of falling for one of those, you will find that all the buttons come off the first time you wear it, which is disappointing’ Of course for her, Paris meant Givenchy - but also Balenciaga, Jean Patou, Valentino, de la Renta. But also Westwood. Delighting in the eclectic, she loved her Elvis slippers as much as those by Givenchy & pristine collared shirts from Turnbull & Asser. As she got older, she favoured a tweedy look with wellies, pearls and an ERII perm This month, a friend of the Cavendishes, Erdem Moralioglu has dedicated/devoted his Spring/Summer collection to Debo - having dived into Chatsworth’s archives of 4 centuries. Vogue reported from the runway - Elvis remembered in starburst embroideries & whispers of rhinestone cowboys. Plumes appeared reflecting her passion for poultry & bobbing bows of feathers on kitten heels looked like prancing chickens The show closed to a recording of the now-lorrst tones of Debo with her Mitford drawl & dresses crafted from Chatsworth curtains. The cleverest thing since Fraulein Maria turned her drapes into play clothes for the sailor-suited von Trapps. Chatsworth book signing of chicken boy tomorrow at 1pm stable shops - photo of Duchess Deborah Devonshire with kind permission of the Mitford archive , feeding the car park flock and footage from DD’s Wait for Me book trailer - the last hens she kept at the old vicarage began as a mixed flock large enough for her to still take spare eggs to the farm shop to be put in a bowl with a label ‘Eggs from the Dowager Duchess’s flock’ they sold out within minutes. Laid by Burford Browns, Light Sussex, White Leghorns, Warrens and welsummers for ‘thrilling dark brown eggs’ although she admitted to an interview in the Financial Times that the welsummers were the stupidest hens she had ever kept!

History Monday - The Devonshire Aquamarine Brooch. A Belle Époque aquamarine and diamond brooch, once owned by Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire. The large oval-cut aquamarine brooch, set horizontally within a delicate border of old brilliant and single-cut diamonds. It sold in auction at Bonhams for nearly triple its estimated price, it sold for 94,000 pounds. Emily Barber, Head of Bonhams Jewellery Department, UK, commented: “Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire, youngest of the famous Mitford sisters, and châtelaine of Chatsworth for more than 50 years, was a woman of exquisite taste – as this beautiful brooch clearly demonstrates. Not only is the piece of superb quality, it has exceptional provenance. The Duchess can be seen wearing the brooch in a photograph of her alongside Cecil Beaton at the ‘White Ball’, held by Prince Rupert Loewenstein (the financial manager of The Rolling Stones) at his home in Holland Park, London in 1969. The photograph is also published in the Duchess’ autobiography, Wait For Me! Memoirs of the Youngest Mitford Sister.” Born in 1920, Debo – as she was widely known – was one of the six aristocratic Mitford Sisters, who enthralled the public with their stylish – often controversial – lives, as well as their contrasting political views. The family was immortalised by her eldest sister, Nancy, in the novels The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate. Debo was a favourite of the Royal Family and counted intellectuals and artists as friends, including Tom Stoppard, Alan Bennett, Evelyn Waugh, Lucian Freud and John Betjeman. John F. Kennedy, a childhood friend, danced with her at her coming out ball. In 1941, she married Lord Andrew Cavendish, son of the 10th Duke of Devonshire, who succeeded to the dukedom in 1950. She was widowed in 2004 and died in 2014. At her funeral, more than 600 staff from the Chatsworth estate and hundreds of members of the public lined the route to the church. . . #deborahduchessofdevonshire #duchessofdevonshire #devonshirebrooch #bonhams #bonhamsauctions #aquamarinebrooch #antiquebrooch #aquamarinebirthstone #mitfordsisters #cecilbeaton #historymonday
