At first glance, his art looks like pure horror—ruined worlds, faceless figures, decaying bodies, and endless silence. Many people believe that an artist who paints like this must have been mentally disturbed, but that is not true. Beksiński lived a quiet and disciplined life. He was calm, polite, and deeply private. He strongly disliked when people tried to explain his paintings or attach fixed meanings to them. That is why he never gave titles to his works—he believed titles would limit the viewer’s imagination. He once described his process with a famous line: “I paint as if I were photographing dreams.” He did not paint exact dreams or nightmares, but the feeling dreams leave behind—fear without monsters, silence without sound, and emptiness without explanation. Beksiński said his paintings were not about hell, death, or religion. He painted instinctively, letting images appear in his mind and transferring them directly onto the canvas. He was interested in mood and atmosphere, not stories or symbols. That is why his art feels timeless. It does not scare you instantly like a horror movie—it stays with you. Since then, it's been a decaying example of a modern American Ghost Town This is the story of a mining village created in the 1910s by the Pittsburgh Limestone Company. The company built homes for its worker, preventing them from unionizing, thus creating the town known as Yellow Dog Village.
