A kid in China dropped a lit firecracker into a manhole, unaware it was filled with methane biogas from decomposing waste. The confined space turned into a combustion chamber instantly. The pressure spike was so violent it blew the pavement apart and tossed a parked SUV like it was made of cardboard.

SII love keyhole raised beds. Having your compost heap in the middle of the raised bed is such a great idea.
The material used to make the compost structure needs to be permeable so that the decomposing compost material can gradually leach out into the soil. This reduces the need to fertilise and water your plants as it’s constantly fed with organic nutrients from the compost.
The worms will also move in and out of the central compost, helping to relocate the organic composting material and nutrients.
I used willow withies (the bendy sticks) to weave the shape of my keyhole bed. And I cut the uprights from a hazel bush that I was coppicing. If using willow, just be careful it doesn’t root. It roots very easily when fresh and if it comes into contact with soil. Wait a while so that the willow isn’t fresh before weaving it, if it’s going to come in contact with soil. Then it shouldn’t root. Hazel is far less likely to root.

For more than 70 years, this place, often called “Fire Hill,” has burned nonstop. While the sight is visually mesmerizing, it also represents a massive loss of usable energy. Extracting and storing the gas would require major infrastructure and investment, so for now, it remains a natural spectacle rather than a national resource.
It’s a powerful reminder that some of Earth’s most valuable treasures aren’t hidden — they’re right in front of us, slowly disappearing while waiting to be harnessed.

This timelapse reveals the dynamic cycle of algal blooms in Hartbeespoort, South Africa from June 2022 to July 2023. These blooms can form when nutrient-rich runoff from agriculture meets warm temperatures and sunlight. As they die off, decomposing algae consume oxygen, creating conditions that threaten aquatic life and contaminate water supplies.
Satellite data helps scientists track these blooms from space, providing early warnings about water quality changes.
