Franz Kafka (1883-1924) was a Czech writer famous for portraying alienation, anxiety, and the absurd struggles of human existence.
Kafka expands this idea by saying that reality itself can feel too heavy for people to face. Because of that, they create illusions and temporary comforts to escape it. These illusions become a substitute for happiness, even though deep down they know it is not real.
