EIDuring the early months of the war, after the First Battle of Ypres, the sheer number of unburied bodies in parts of Belgium and France became so overwhelming that soldiers fought for weeks among decomposing corpses. In some trenches, the dead were built directly into trench walls because there was no safe way to retrieve or bury them under constant artillery fire. The soil in Flanders was so saturated with bodies and shelling that later battles including the Battle of Passchendaele churned human remains back to the surface. Even today, farmers in the region still uncover bones and unexploded ordnance in what is known as the “Iron Harvest.” World War I’s static trench warfare, industrial artillery, and poison gas made it one of the first conflicts where the landscape itself effectively became a mass grave.
