If you want to grow leaders, you have to learn to delegate well. Too many leaders think delegation means handing off a task and hoping for the best. Real delegation is a leadership skill. It builds trust, capability, and ownership. Here’s the rhythm I use with leaders I coach: 1. Introduce the task Decide what you should keep and what someone else can own. 2. Choose the right person Match the task difficulty and risk with the person’s experience and strengths. 3. Demonstrate what good looks like Share examples, explain the outcome, and clarify timelines. 4. Confirm understanding Invite questions. Make sure expectations and follow-up are clear. 5. Give authority and resources Allow them to determine the process while staying aligned on the outcome. 6. Let go Once the expectations are set, step back and give them space to execute. 7. Support and monitor Check in, review progress, celebrate wins, and help problem solve when needed. Delegation is not about doing less. Saying “Can you handle this?” without explaining how, which tools to use, or what success looks like doesn’t give anyone real ownership. True delegation is empowering. For us, that looks like using Loom to record exactly what needs to happen, step by step.
