Make homemade hot cross buns they said, it will be ‘easy’ they said😭! This took HOURS… kneading, proofing, more waiting… and then stressing if they’re even cooked through or hot cross rocks🫠 Luckily mine turned out okay in the end, not perfect, but decent…fairly soft, fluffy, warm, and spiced just right 😍 BUT worth it? Not sure🤔 Will I complain about this for the rest of the year? Definitely 😂 Will I ever make it again? Errr don’t think so 😝! If you’re making homemade hot cross buns this Easter consider this your warning but also your sign to give it a try anyway if you’re brave and curious…you may be better at this than I am and have more patience than me😅🙈 Hot cross buns recipe Recipe credit: Recipetineats 🌸 Buns: 4¼ cups flour (keep 1/4 cup aside and judge consistency before adding it in) 10g instant yeast 1/2 cup castor sugar (Use less if you don’t want them sweet) 1½ cups warm milk 1 egg 50g butter (melted) 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp mixed spice 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup mixed nuts. I hate raisins so I used nuts but use raisins for a more traditional recipe Zest of 1 orange Crosses: ½ cup flour + 5 tbsp water + dash of cinnamon (again judge the consistency and add more water if needed, can’t be too thick or too runny) Glaze: 2 tbsp honey+ 2 tsp water + squeeze of orange Method Combine everything → form a dough using cake mixer. Dry ingredients first then wet. Keep this going for about 5 min. Add flour if too sticky or let rest and add 1tbsp milk if too dry. Cover → let it rise in a warm spot (60-90 mins) Divide into 12 → roll into balls, place on a tray and let it rise again for about 45 mins Crosses: Mix paste → pipe on top Bake 180°C → 20-25 mins until golden Brush warm buns with honey mix #hotcrossbuns #easterbaking #homemade #bakingstruggles #hotcrossbunsrecipe

Hot cross buns… but the way they were originally made 🤍 I never thought twice about them… until I actually read the ingredients list 👀 Most store-bought versions are packed with additives to extend shelf life. So I started making my own… using simple, recognisable ingredients ✨ They’re soft, naturally sweet & actually filling! Save this for Easter baking 🐣 Recipe 👇🏼 Ingredients (Makes 12) - Dough • 1 cup warm milk • 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast • ¼ cup brown sugar • 3 ½ cups plain flour • 1 tsp cinnamon • ½ tsp all spice • ½ tsp salt • 50g butter, melted • 1 egg • 1/2 cup sultanas Cross • ½ cup plain flour • 5–6 tbsp water Glaze • 2 tbsp apricot jam • 1 tbsp hot water Method - 1. Combine warm milk, yeast and sugar. Let sit 5–10 mins until foamy. 2. In a large bowl, mix flour, spices and salt. Add yeast mixture, melted butter and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms. 3. Knead 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic (or 5 minutes in a mixer). Add sultanas and knead briefly to combine. 4. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours until doubled. 5. Divide into 12 even balls and place in a lined baking tray so they just touch. Cover and let rise again for 30–45 mins. 6. Mix flour and water into a thick paste. Pipe crosses over buns. 7. Bake at 180°C (fan 160°C) for 20–25 mins until golden. 8. Warm jam with water and brush over hot buns for that glossy finish. #hotcrossbuns #realfoodrecipes #reduceultraprocessedfoods #easterbaking #mumlifeaustralia
