POCrate training Popcorn started with a focused training session just like this one. Training using positive reinforcement, paired with building a positive association through naps and meals in the crate, and gradual desensitization means Popcorn has been sleeping through the night in the crate since his third night home (I’d say his second night, but he technically got up in the middle of the night to go potty).
This method uses shaping to build comfort step-by-step—starting with voluntary entry to give puppy agency, then reinforcing calm while the door was closed to condition emotional regulation. Each short, successful rep activates reward pathways in the brain, making the crate feel safe and predictable. Over time, repeated exposure paired with positive outcomes reduce anxiety and build the neural associations needed for long-term calm behavior. Make sure to pair crate training with a high value treat if puppy isn’t as eager about the crate. Fear and curiosity can’t exist in the same moment.
And when your horse is in a fear response, he can’t learn, he will only@look to survive.
I want my horse to investigate the scary thing - not brace against it.
I want my horses to stay connected. Not to shut down.
And that means I don’t punish fear, I support and guide through it.

THDesensitization training is one of my favorite training techniques for a lot of different issues. The main one is dealing with inappropriate reactions to certain triggers (I.e. kids running around but not bothering you, dogs minding their own business, loud trucks, etc). This will work with any thing you want, as long as you don’t rush the process. Do not start or move your dog to a point that they cannot yet handle. Start very very far away and work your way closer as your dog realizes that the trigger is not actually scary anymore.
‼️DO NOT allow the trigger (I.e. dogs or people) to interact with your dog if they are fearful or overly interested. The WHOLE goal of this is to teach your dog that whatever they are afraid of WON’T bother them.‼️
