It’s estimated that the desert tortoise has roamed the area in and around the Mojave Desert for more than 15 million years. Within the past century, their existence has been threatened by climate change, habitat loss, and a peculiar import that arrived with human encroachment—ravens. A conservation biologist and a Mojave native have come up with a novel approach to mitigate the problem: booby-trapping the desert to train the ravens to leave the tortoises alone. We found one! The Desert tortoise is a unique creature that inhabits the Mojave and we found one standing directly in the middle of Route 66. I quickly pulled over to direct some traffic around to help him get the space and time needed to cross the road safely. Then he graciously obliged me with a photoshoot afterward by giving me ALL of the angles. Desert Tortoises are herbivores, they spend roughly 95% of their lives under ground and can live to be 50-80 years old, weighing 8–15 lbs. Their populations have declined roughly 90% over the last 20 years so this was a rare treat. They can survive over a year without water by storing it in their bladders. So never pick up a desert tortoise unless it is in immediate danger. It can cause them to empty their bladder as a defense mechanism, which can lead to life-threatening dehydration. #deserttortoise #arizona #wildlifephotography

Hello everyone, my name is Tibor Molnar (@thetibormolnar) and I have been given the honor to be a guest editor @unbiodiversity this week. I am a nature photographer by passion and have a background in geology by education among other things. I will be highlighting some of the amazing living things I have come across in my travels and hoping that by the end of the week you will have seen some in a completely different light. I started appreciating nature early in life. From camping to traveling everything I did seemed to involve the outdoors when it could. I did everything I could to learn about anything and everything that inhabits our planet. From books, TV shows and anything else I could get my hands on. I would also like to thank my mom and dad, because they both nurtured and encouraged that love I have. From stopping the car on a Texas road so I could help a desert tortoise make it across safely to visiting as many places that had animals on our many road trips. I picked up my first DSLR camera many years ago before a trip to East Africa that completely changed my life. While I had traveled plenty before, that was when I realized that there was nothing stopping me from seeing anything that until before were only childhood dreams. I also realized how much I needed to learn to use my camera. Armed with a new found passion, photography and a bucket list of animals to see in the wild, my journey started. Things took an amazing turn 4 years ago when I started macro photography. While I always appreciated all of earths creatures once I was able to see things with my camera I couldn’t with my naked eye I was hooked. Since then most of my photography has involved little things and I have learned more than I could’ve imagined.
