If you don’t understand Linux, DevOps will catch up with you quickly.
2️⃣ Git + GitHub / GitLab
Branching, pull requests, resolving conflicts, workflows.
Version control is something you’ll use every single day.
3️⃣ Networking
CIDR, subnets, DNS, routing, load balancers.
A lot of people skip this… but tools like Kubernetes rely heavily on networking knowledge.
4️⃣ Cloud (start with AWS)
Focus on the core services first:
EC2
VPC
IAM
S3
CloudWatch
You don’t need to learn every service — just understand the fundamentals.
5️⃣ Terraform
Infrastructure as Code is essential.
Use Terraform to build and automate things like VPCs, EC2 instances, and IAM.
6️⃣ Docker
Learn how to build images, run containers, and understand container networking.
Start by containerising small applications.
7️⃣ CI/CD
Use tools like GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.
Automate the full pipeline:
Build → Test → Deploy.
8️⃣ Kubernetes
Pods, Deployments, Services, Ingress, Helm.
This is where everything starts to come together.
9️⃣ Build real projects
This is what separates people who learn from people who get hired.
Deploy an application on AWS using Terraform.
Containerise it with Docker.

Show that you can actually ship working systems

If you want a £60k–£120k DevOps role, your roadmap is actually very straightforward.
Not easy… but simple.
1️⃣ Linux
Learn commands, permissions, processes, networking.
If you don’t understand Linux… DevOps will punch you in the face later.
2️⃣ Git + GitHub/GitLab
Branching, PRs, merge conflicts, workflows.
This is your daily bread.
3️⃣ Networking
CIDR, subnets, routing, DNS, load balancers.
Kubernetes will eat you alive without this.
4️⃣ Cloud (AWS first)
EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, RDS, CloudWatch.
Just the fundamentals first – don’t chase 50 services.
5️⃣ Terraform
IaC is non-negotiable.
Build VPCs, EC2s, IAM, and automate everything.
6️⃣ Docker
Images, containers, multi-stage builds, networking.
Deploy small apps to learn.
7️⃣ CI/CD
GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.
